Well, my search goes on, primarily due to a colleague of mine, in HR, who will not OK the bike to work scheme.

In the meantime I've stumbled across a nice Bike Shop who stock Specialized and Trek ranges of bikes. Anything to watch? Anything to choose between them? Any wanted/unwanted reputations?

I have the Trek 1.2 mentioned above (except I've a 50-34 chainring), its a great entry-level bike, would highly recommend it.

the trek at a glance looks better, but would be worried by the alu fork, what fork does the specialized have? both are very similar, have you ridden both? have you thought about 2nd hand i,f you cant go btws, much better value due to the scheme, people always selling off cheap entry level bikes with little or no use?

Tell me about it! Not a very nice person (especially with any semblance of power at her disposal).

My request landed on her desk on July 30th.

I have the allez myself and a friend has the trek 1.2, Iv ridden both and have to say I much perfer the allez. Maybe Im just used to it or pride in ownership or what have you but I much prefered the feel of the specialized.

If you get the chance then try both

What do you want the bike for: racing, touring, sportive, going to the shops ???
I dunno how you can get advice with knowing what you want to do with it.
Allez is fine for entry level racing etc but not the best choice for sportive type stuff -if you want to get into it you need to start checking frame geomotery and tyres etc.

Popped in there myself on Saturday, fine shop and good range of bikes. Good value in the accessories there compared to other shops I've been in this year.
