    Hi there,

Not sure if there'll be anyone who has done this on here but hope there is.

We're weighing up the cost of getting married in gretna green or here in dublin.

We were wondering if anyone had been to a wedding or got married in gretna

i asked a scottish mate of mine who travels through it a fair bit, what would getting married there be like and he was less than complimentary about the place. his advice was not to trust the photos on vendor's websites as it's far smaller/run down/touristy than they would have you believe. but that's a just a local's view. you could always try and seek out some independant reviews of whatever vendor you're researching - ie NOT on their own website. try tripadvisor for a start, maybe?

yeah, Gretna is an absolute dump - it makes Hull look classy. avoid like the plague, you'd be horribly dissapointed.

Park registry office in Glasgow is gorgeous, a beautiful building overlooking Kelvingrove park, the Muesum and Glasgow university - and it'll be the same price (ish) as some hellhole in Gretna and you'll walk out to have your photos taken and you'll not think 'Christ, i'm in the holding pen for the Jeremy Kyle show'...

Have to agree - a dump!

Went to a wedding there once expecting it to be lovely and romantic and 'old world'....or just Scottish! It was dull and tacky. Great wedding inspite of the awful surroundings but that was down to the couple involved, seeing the funny side of it.

Maybe Edinburgh or Glasgow if it's Scotland that interests you or keep it small and have it in Dublin/Ireland.

much easier to keep it small/cheap/under control if its abroad - even if its only Scotland - it makes it much easier to avoid inviting 'casual' guests and your mums 14th cousin twice removed.

yes you have the initial travel costs, but the savings you make in having a wedding to which all and sundry can't come to vastly cover those.

if the OP were looking for recommendations i'd suggest Glasgow's Park registry office, photo's and drinks at Glasgow University's Huntarian Museum, Dinner at the Corinthian Club in the Merchant City and a bridal suite at One Devonshire Gardens - or, if you want budget, the Lorne Park hotel in Kelvingrove.

Like most of the other posters I would advise you to avoid going to Gretna. I am getting married in Glasgow next summer, so if you decide to get married in Glasgow and would like some more feedback on places then feel free to send me a PM
