So if you were a technican in a it centre of a college and the network went done? what would be the protocol?

I'm doing a report for college and just looking for ideas
I figure they'd try to isolate the problem, contact the ISP

    network or internet access?

IT centre is a bit vague as well. what type of IT centre? A network operations centre for a server room?

I realise that this is a college project (generally not allowed unless you ask permission first by the way but we'll let that slide :D) but we cant do your project for you.

This would possibly be a Disaster recovery scenario more than a pure security scenario. But without any information or background to go on, solate the problem/contact ISP would pretty much cover it....

Both network and internet and by it centre I guess I mean the area of the college when oversee's the network
Ah its not really a project, its draw up a flowchart of a contingency plan, just a drawing on a page actually,1-2 days to do it.Majority done, just thought i'd throw the thread up incase I left up out any glaring omissions

Just a educated guess, but surely the contingency plan is to shut off the whole bloody thing, fix it, and get it back up ASAP. You in NUIG?

Though if you mean the network as in the WLAN nodes dotted all over the place - well then, if one got compromised, just isolate, quarentine, repair.

Step 1 : Kick Server / Networking Gear....

Step 2 : Goto Pub and get Drunk....

    Step 3 : .............

    Step 4 : Profit.

:P by step 3, '...........' do you mean hangover and attempt at fixing things in that state, or try fix them drunk?
I quite like that protocol :D

The steps I always used to take were:

    1. Fix problem
    2. Play quake (but if anyone calls, we're still 'running diagnostics')

OK, give us what you have so far. "How would you fix a network problem" is too vague to get useful answers.

if one ISP goes down then the load balancing router should fail over to the backup one

if the load balancing router goes down , use the backup router (of course if you have enough redundancy the other router will also be connected so there won't be any single point of failure apart form a power cut and there ain't much you can do about that unless you have a large generator on site )

after that it's isolate the problem and repair

Reads more like an incident management question than a security one to me. Servers and Systems might be a better place for this...
