Dublin Bus route 18 frequency and punctuality

Am I just having the worst luck in the world or is the 18 bus incredibly, incredibly unreliable? I'd like to use this bus to get into work - I can walk 5 minutes to the bus stop and then 5 minutes from the bus stop to get to work, as opposed to the 16, which I take now, which leaves me the far side of where I need to be, a half hour walk to work, at which point the 45 minute walk to work in the cold look just as viable...

Last Saturday I got to the bus stop to see an 18 going the other way (out toward Sandford). An hour later an 18 came the other way Presumably that one 18 went out to Sandford, turned around, and came back. If I had walked, I would have gotten there faster.

Is there an alternative? The timetable says it runs every half hour or so but I've stood at that bus stop more than once waiting three quarters of an hour or so. I need to get from Harold's Cross to Baggot St in the mornings.

You could take the 83 as far as Harcourt St. and walk to Baggot St. from there?

The 18 is a route which suffers greatly with its routing. As it travels across the city, it doesn't have the same priority as other routes heading inbound towards town. As far back as I can remember it has always been unreliable.

If it's any help, the route is changing in the near future, with a proposed frequency of every 15 minutes. This will hopefully mean less of a wait between buses, but the route is also being extended which may mean more traffic problems.
