Fears for 180 jobs at Shannon Aerospace

This is bad news. Pretty bad management considering the media are covering it a day before the staff meeting.

There are fears that up to 180 jobs may be cut at the giant Shannon Aerospace maintenance company based at Shannon in Co Clare.

The company, a subsidiary of the global Lufthansa Technik AG based in Hamburg, employs 628 full-time staff in Shannon.

It also employs a number of part-time staff and interns on its training programme.

The base at Shannon specialises in the maintenance and overhaul of aircraft from Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas.

Staff have been called to a meeting at the Shannon base tomorrow morning, in which the company is due to discuss a re-organisation of the company and its plans to sustain a viable business in the region.

The company is making no statement about how this re-organisation will affect staff numbers, but there are fears locally that the company is seeking up to 180 redundancies.

In the Dáil, Clare TD Pat Breen asked if the Government got a warning that the jobs were to be lost.

He did not get a reply as he was ruled out of order by the Ceann Comhairle, Seamus Kirk.

I'd dearly love to know how rte etc. found out first, staff have no real idea of what's actually happening untill tomorrow, no indication given only that it's going to be bad.

And I'm nearly certain that the media has know about this since at least yesterday.

The usual ploy now by bigger companies would be to give the press a media release in advance of the announcement but have it dated, the media won't be allowed release exact details before the announcement, it's what Dell did when they closed their factory

I heard from a couple of employees last week a big announcement regarding job losses was coming this week. There is always a leak somewhere.

That's a tough break on them, hopefully they'll be able to get another role somewhere else, there are a lot of highly skilled workers in there, hopefully the 107 roles will be people who want to go.

    23 Direct
    3 Department Heads
    61 Indirect
    20 Managers

For a change the direct staff didn't get the full brunt of the stick. Usually the direct workers come out worst when there are cuts.

Aerospace + Elsevier getting 100 job cuts on the same day. I was stopped by a news crew who thought I was from Elsevier. Your one with a big smile on her asking how it feels.

What is it with media why do they do it. how would they like it if a microphone was stuck in their face and say how does it feel!! can they not be more sensitive, Obviously not.

Cause it's easier to get some kind of emotional picture than do actual journalism

Any news on the package be offered to the people affected?

    4 weeks inclusive of statutory.

I was talking to a couple of people there today and it appears there are 107 jobs 'to begin with'. By the time they have all the cuts made there will be approx. 200 gone.

In one particular scenario 16/20 jobs are gone in one particular area. All 20 are being let go but can reapply for the remaining 4 jobs. The unlucky 16 get 4 wks per year of service. The remaining 4 will be required to take a 10% pay cut. This is just one scenario, there are more like it which will unfold over time. They are also introducing a 3 cycle shift system.

Should hear more tomorrow but afaik the redundancies will take effect before Christmas.

Surely if all 20 are being made redundant, all 20 get redundancy. Reapplying for a job does not stop you getting redundancy, aer lingus did that last year or so. Only problem for the 4 who get their jobs back is that they will obviously have the worse terms and conditions, coupled with it being a new contract, so if they get let go 6 months or a year and a half down the line, no further redundancy.
If i worked there, and was lucky enough to be one of the 4, I would use that redundancy to pay off any uninsured credit card bills/ loans and start cutting back just in case.
