Lidl Car Stuff

I'm new enough to driving (only got my fill license about two months ago) so I'm still only figuring out my way around my car. I'm in the process of putting together an emergency/breakdown kit and have a few items already.

I saw that Lidl have some items on sale this week though and I wonder if they're any use.

I was thinking in particular of the jump leads:

Can anyone advise if these are any good or am I better off paying out for decent pair? Any advice is appreciated

You won't use them often so even low quality will last. I have Lidl leads too and have had them 3 years/used about 4 times. Still working fine.
If you intend to do work on the car yourself (oil/tyres/pads) then the axle stands and cross spanner would be handy.
A fire extinguisher is always handy, in the car or the house.

I got that torque wrench, it's pretty good if you ever intend on doing oil changes and stuff, even for getting stuck wheel bolts off works well.

Aside from opening wheel nuts I wouldn't reckon cross spanners are too usefull tbh

The trolley jack, depending if its compact or not can be useful in the boot. I would prefer dealing with a puncture with one of them versus the scissors jack that normally accompnies the spare wheel.

I'd avoid putting anything with this kinda dead weight in your boot, god forbid but if you ever were to be in a crash and it came lose in your boot it will go through the rear seats and it will go through the front seats, and if you're in the way...well probably not something you'd walk away from.

Most of Lidl's and Aldi's stuff is fine for light-medium use and is so cheap I have two sets of spanners etc to keep in each vehicle. I'd be selective about fixings and the like though, the screws are made of cheese and the Lidl's hose clips are useless for example.

I have a torque wrench, ratchet & socket set, axle stands and hydraulic jack from Lidl and I have to say, they have pais for themselves tenfold. Especially the ratchet & socket set.

With that said, I had to replace the 1/2 inch drive ratchet with a teng because the screws holding the front & back plate snapped. Other than that everything else is still going strong and I use them fairly often.

Aldi had similar stuff last week.. i got the torque wrench and the boot tidy.. All good stuff..

Have the Lidl axle stands from about 3 years ago.. still perfect.

Fire extinguisher is always handy.. may pick one up myself.

I think they are the same ones as I've had for donkeys years now.

Pretty good shtuff ...strong leads, decent length, starts the 2.5l camper engine without getting warm


The crossbar for wheel nuts is pants ...the bars are too short to get decent torque (ie. stubborn nuts still won't open) and the shape is awkward to store.
A telescopic bar (Lidl does it occasionally fo 5 or 6 Euro) is much better (and serves well as a breaker bar for other applications)

I wouldn't use the torque wrench for wheel stud removal tbh. I killed one whilst trying!

AFAIK certain jump leads will only jump start a class of engine. I know mine do up to 2.5L in petrol diesel. Not to sure about the ones in lidl but they look like a pair I tried to jump start my 1.9 diesel that didnt work. Good to keep that in mind before you purchase.

Hmm, there does seem to be a lot in that kit for 20 quid. The cynic in me is wondering what the quality is like though.

Those jump leads look to be top quality. 25mm2 is definitely heavy duty. 16mm2 would be perfectly adequate for a regular car.

Get the warning triangle and a reflector vest too.

got jump leads in aldi/lidl and they wouldnt start my mondeo across a honda civic vti coupe...usless things couldnt carry enough current to jolt a millipede

the civic guy had jump leads in his boot that worked though...:rolleyes:

Anyone know if that 18V buffer is any use?

the cables are ok but the clamps are sh1te,

the jacks are good quality and I have used them to lift well in excess of their max recommended weight,

Thanks for this. I already have a triangle and hi-vis in the boot, just working on building up my collection!

I've only got a little 1.3L petrol one. The car's a Starlet. I wonder would they do the trick on that.

The buffer isnt great, I used it before and it left holograms on the car.

I have the stands and jack about 3 years now and they've been used countless times and never had a problem definitly worth buying

Don't make the association between cheap and crap when it comes to Aldi or Lidl, those jump leads have the 'GS' mark which means they have been independently tested and approved in Germany. I bought a pair a few months ago though back then they had two jump leads, one was for 2.5L and higher engines which probably meant six or eight cylinders and the other pair was for smaller cars, this one you're looking at appears to be 'one size fits all'.

I bought the hub caps today and they were ****e, one was broken when I opened the box and when I tried to fit another one the clips on the back just fell off. Brought them back and got refund no problem.
