How many of you are aware that a large amount of bus lanes are also shared with cyclists?

It seems fairly rare knowledge amongst minibus drivers.

There's a picture of a bicycle beside the bus usually. How many cyclists are aware that they are excluded from contraflow bus lanes?

I thought cyclists were allowed to use bus lanes? Didnt know they are not allowed to use contraflow bus lanes but it makes perfect sense that they are not.

I dont think anyone really minds a cyclist in a bus lane except when the cyclist takes over the lane and impedes the progress of buses etc.
I dont know how many times I've seen it on the Drumcondra road, outbound during evening rush hour. Its all uphill and a lone cyclist, in the middle of the lane, going pretty slow, holding back several buses with maybe 300 people on board - thats just plain ignorant and anti social.
I saw one of these cyclists being hauled in off the road by the gardai once though - pity it doesnt happen everyday!

In saying that, Bus Eireann are usually total gentlemen. They are patient and overtake me with plenty of space to spare. Its minibus drivers.

not always true. Contra flow bus lane outbound on Leeson Street from St Stephen Green has a cycle lane as part of it.

Minibus forum would be best place for this topic really ;)
You might mention to your cycling buddies that when the green man is illuminated that's for folks walking, not cycling ;)

Would you believe I actually went and checked for a Minibus forum just now?

And how many of your lycra-clad brethren are aware of what a red light, yield sign or roundabout is for? Twice in the past month I've almost taken out a cyclist; each time wearing earphones and ignoring yield signs. Yesterday I almost had my nose taken off while using a pedestrian crossing; next time I'll clothesline the f*cker.

A car almost took me out when it went through a red light this morning.

Apparently the "school run" is an allowable excuse

Did the driver say that or are you trying to be witty ? Stroll around any city and you'll see far more cyclists breaking red lights than motorists, factor in the ratio of cyclists to motorists and then the amount of cyclists breaking red lights is quite humongous compared to motorists.

Could you remind all your cyclist buddies that the footpath is for pedestrians - not cyclists.

    a) I have no commuting cyclist buddies.
    b) I drive 80% of the time.

MPV, kids, schoolbags, exiting a housing estate, 1km from a school, flustered mother looking like she's done nothing wrong, so wrong in fact that I and the motorists proceeding through the junction have managed to get almost to her and be impeded by her.

    Yeah, I'm being witty.

Did I say otherwise? I merely pointed out the fact that not _everyone_ does it, and not _every_ car driver is a saint.

Not a hope in hell of sorting that one out when the Gardai on bikes use the footpath too.

Just have to live with it.

    Hi Jumpy,

Kindly inform your lycra clad mates that red lights also apply to cyclists.

    Regards,

    Regards,

Probably the same amount as motorist tbh. This morning on the N3 at the Little Chef junction 2 cars on the lane to my right went through the red light, oddly enough I didn't see any cyclists breaking red lights this morning. Doe that mean in the mentality of this forum that therefore motorists only break red lights ?

It's a problem with people in general, not cyclist or motorists. There's idiots in every form of transport on the road.

Maybe you should stop wearing earphones and start paying attention to yield signs then :)

This has to be the most ironic post on boards in ages. Your thread??? You are the OP - you dont own the thread!
Your post seems looks a lot more like a troll than mine, considering you seem to be baiting motorists in the MOTORING forum:rolleyes:

    b) Yes, the we is the people in the Cycling forum.

    c) Please stay on topic.

I'm sure they know this. Like most things, some people obey the law while others disregard it without a second thought. Unfortunately it hasn't been properly enforced in recent years although I am told the Gardai have been clamping down on red light-jumping and footpath riding in the city centre. Plenty of cyclists do stop at lights, unfortunately it is the ones that sail through them that tend to be recognized more.

Hopefully this new campaign by the gardai will force people to change their habits, but lets not kid ourselves into thinking that cyclists are the only road users who break the law, it's this kind of singling out that is the reason our roads are generally such a stressful place to be for everyone.

    "Bloody cyclist"
    "Porsche driving w**ker!"
    "Feckin' boy racer"
"Stupid b**ch in yer SUV hoggin' the overtaking lane!"

    And so forth....
