Focus Zetec '97 - Passive Key

Hi all. The batteries in the passive key appear to be wasted as you cannot open the car simply by pulling the handle if the key is within the range. However the key will open/close the doors if you press the open/close buttons on the key, however when you try to start the car it tells you 'passive key not detected' and the car will not start. Is it really possible that by simply having a flat battery in the key the car cannot be used?, Is there any other way to start the car?!
    Thanks
