I don't know much about Mitsubishis being honest, but you'll hear this type of crap about Levins, Integras, Civics, Imprezas.....

More than likely it's bollox, Japanese cars are generally bulletproof, if an engine or gearbox goes it's usually because people are dogging their cars, not servicing them properly or badly modifying them.

I wanted one for quite a while, but bided my time, and got an FTO Mivec instead. I'm a big fan of Mitsubishis of that era, I think they're great, and I havne't had any reliability issues whatsoever, with two 1.3 Mirages either. I can't speak for the 1.6 Mivec engine, but reviews of the car seem to be good, and if its an example that hasn't been dogged, it should be great!

Have had 3 Mirages, 2 1.5 Mirages and currently a 1999 1.6 Mivec hat I have had since 2002 and never had a bit of trouble with any of them. Cracking car.

Have the asti rs myself and its pretty reliable over-all. Never had any problems with it engine wise. Gearbox is quiet soft so with enough abuse they will cause problems.

Engine is solid as you'd expect, but in terms of modding theirs not alot about and what is around is very expensive.
You can put in a evo7 ecu (First done in Ireland this year) and with a few uprated parts can hit 200bhp or more.

Mivec kicks in at 6900rpm in the asti rs which is awfully high, but the lower rev's arent as useless as dohc's. More tourqe.
Straight line, it will start well due to lsd gear box, but then when you bang the gears, it drops out of the activation point. Its more suited to tracks/back roads rather than straight lines. Great handling car.

Petrol wise, if Im driving around town its very heavy (40km / €10). On journeys its fine tho. (120km / €10)

Bad points - No sound deadening, no electronics (No clock, electric windows, mirrors) No bucket seats, parts can be tricky to come by.

I would be looking at Asti Zr or Rx if your looking for creature comforts. (bucket seats, electronics, air conditioning and lower mivec activation point) Think of the Asti Rs as a shell with the bare minimum inside.

    Hope that helps!

Any questions feel free to pm me! Can tell you what to look out for when buying one!
