If its displaying red light to the rear of your car or white light to the front it is legal as far as i know.

Operating it while driving might be an offence. The same as holding a mobile phone or touching a sat nav.

    Chief.

I've wanted one of them for a long time.
The following text would be saved as I would need them on a daily basis:

Did you get your licence in a Lucky Bag?
    Learn to use a roundabout.
Indicators are not ornaments on the side of your car.
    Back off tailgater!

Yeah, but you just know everyone would have "GARDA" saved on them, just to wind other drivers up :pac:

(Until of course, you use it on a Garda!)

EDIT: Now there's a question... If I buy one of these and stick the word "POLICE" on it... Am I still impersonating a Garda, or have I found a loophole? I mean... The Police don't operate in the Republic of Ireland, so realistically, you could say that any sensible person should be able to see through it, as a joke.

Tourists would be liable to make the assumption you are official though.

i believe they are actually used by UK police to tell drivers what to do.

i saws it on road wars :)

but these things look cool... wouldn't be bothered though... if you told me to do something like get in the left lane, i'd probably go into the right lane just to piss you off.

I believe our RSU have similar too. It's an LED strip in their lightbar, so not quite the same.

Don;t know if they can customise messages in it, or if it always says the same thing, though.

on public roads, its going to do more harm then good....
i honestly wouldnt bother, it will come across as whacker-ish and will make you look like a (insert name here) then do any good.

Customs have them too, in the rear window of some cars. Havent seen one in a patrol car for some time. Unmarked traffic cars used to have them.

I know a number of motorcyclists in the UK had taken to wearing flourescent police style jackets with "POLITE" written where "POLICE" used to be. Not really illegal, but misleading (and a bit waknery)

Touching a satnav, or an ipod etc, is not an offence in itself, is it?

    Not your ornery onager

well a garda can put it down to lack of vehicle control

whats the difference between changing a song on a ipod and sending a text ?

My point was that holding a mobile phone is a specified offence, the others are not, afaik.

Some of the older unmarked TC cars had them, like the Alfa 155's they had. The screen was on the rear parcel shelf, would pop up and had 10 pre-programmed sentences on it. The control unit had a dial and the mules knew what number meant what message.

An interactive one where the mule can type up a message sounds ideal

I have seen the police in the uk use them and jaundeairme in france .

Also what way are the rules your are not let have red lights on the back other than the normal ones and the same with white lights on the front.

My view is that if you put one of those in your back window it will bring all sorts of trouble while you are driving.
Drivers in this country dont like doing the right thing, a sign telling them to back off will just encourage bad driving.
What time will you be driving with your "CHILD ON BOARD" ? Ill ring the civil defense and see if they will escort you on your journey...

Three things will happen if you get one of these signs.

    1. Other motorists will point and laugh.
    2. You will look like a dickhead
    3. Your car will look like a tacky chav wagon.

Anyway, wouldn't having a Roscommon reg number make people back off?
