Which Engine oil to use

what oil would people recommend for an BMW E39 00. was told to use semi synthetic 10W-40 by one mechanic and full synthetic 5W -30 by another, im not sure if there is much difference , so and advice appreciated

put details into the castrol but got no definitive answer

For a 2000-2004 520i use5W30 FULLY synthetic 6.5 litres.

Halfords.ie have a utility that you can just key in all your car details via drop down menus and they list what oil you need.
