    Hi all,

Just wondering what people think of the following car. Its for my mother before any asks :)

    Peugoet 206 LX 1.4 Hdi
    Diesel
    112,654 kilometers
2006 (1 previous owner, full service history with the same garage when bought new)
    8,250 euro.

It looks like the perfect car for her needs; i.e. small and cheap to run. The HDI engine is meant to get 50+ mpg which was what we are mainly looking for.

However, I am wondering about the price?

Do you think its reasonable or is it clearly 1 or 2 thousand too much (will give it for 8k as well)? As with scrappage offers now you can get new Polo or Fiesta for only a couple of thousand more.
Plus we are going into the end of the year, where an 06 will be 5 years old in just another 2 months

You will find a nice suitable car out there for much cheaper. Keep looking I would suggest.

Sounds like its 2 grand too much. There's plenty of value out there.

Sit tight and keep an eye on "Donedeal" and the like.

That is mad money for a 206 imo.

Here is a younger 207 for less money:

the 1.4 hdi is best avoided it gives alot of trouble, think its the same engine that in the 1.4 tdci fiesta

Maybe this Focus or one like it? Less mileage, newer and should be reliable and equally economical....

    That 206 is way overpriced.

I had one a while back in a 307 and put over 120k miles and never had a bit of trouble with it!

Yes, if one is gone the chances are the others are nearly done, I'd do them asap.

Thanks for the replies lads, you confirmed what I expected.

Any other recommendation for some other cars in a similar class? Requirement is basically small (polo,corsa,206 size) and economical so most likely diesel.

I really like the look of that 207 'bazz26' replied with, will probably give that garage a ring.
I think the focus however might be too big, its the kinda of car I wouldn't mind myself actually, but thats a different matter :)

What kind of mileage is your mom doing? Most superminis are quite economical in petrol form. Diesel versions of these cars are quite rare as usually as if someone is doing a good bit of driving they tend to opt for something bigger which is more comfortable on long trips.

My sister bought a 2008 1.25 litre Fiesta back in July and paid €7600 for it, she is currently getting high 40mpg on 1/4 motorway, 3/4 urban runs.

If your mom is set on buying a small diesel then she should also have a look at these:

Its a lot of "small journeys" < 10 miles but then multiple times a day. I would say 10k a year? thats guessing to be honest.
Its hard to get the right car shell we put it and the reason why we are looking anyway is she was complaining about the 'cost' of the current (06 3-door suzuki grand vitara 1.6 petrol) plus finding it "too big".

This will probably also mean restricting it to just garages in Cork too.

Thank for your advice by the way, much appreciated :)

To be honest at only 10k a year I would go for a petrol engined car of similar size. This will open up alot more choice to her and they will definately be more economical than her current Vitara.
