I am heading to France tomorrow night in the car and due to some problems fuel is scarce. Is it legal to carry a jerry can full of petrol?

You won't be allowed bring jerry cans on to the ferry.

What part of France you going to? Sounds like brittany is worst affected. There's is fuel there so if you arrive with a full tank you have plenty of time to fill up.

Worst case is you lose the can, basically

I DID have my car searched by port security in Holyhead (twice) and by tunnel security in Folkestone and have been let through with a fuel can.

Yeah I got searched going onto the tunnel at folkestone, basically got pulled over, asked to go through an xray thing and the guy asked did I have gas or fuel in the boot, said I had a few gas stove canisters and think he gave me a different card to hang from my rear view mirror. No major deal. If you read the guide lines for the ferry it will tell you what can be brought on.

If your going to France, they take a dim view of jerry cans, get a pierre can and you'l be fine.

I've gone over with diesel cars with a boot full of 5 gallon drums of diesel, same with vans, and not had any probs. Put the jerrypierre can into a suitcase, to ahem, give it some padding, perhaps.
