UPC Relocation Fee

    Hi All,

Our flat, which has quite big, has been recently setup for UPC internet only. The connection is situated downstairs and it works perfect with 4 bars if you have your laptop downstairs, but you would be lucky to get an intermittent 2 bar signal upstairs!

I rang NTL who suggested changing the channels to 11, which did work as originally it was giving 1 bar signal if even that, so it did improve to two bars (intermittently).

I also got hold of a belkin N-Wireless router thinking that would increase the signal but no, it also shows 2 bars.

So, I rang UPC asking to relocate the connection point to upstairs but they charge 50 euros for this!

Would anyone have any ideas to either increase the signal by another means or how to avoid the 50e fee by using UPC to help solve the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

Eventhough you only get 2 bars, is it a steady signal? Are you experiencing any signal drops?

You could invest in some home plug devices. These extend Internet access over power cables in your home, but a pair is likely to cost more than €50.

Home Plugs are great but they are costly; I think about €100 for a starter set (2 plugs).

Have you no UPC point upstairs already?

Idealy wireless n would probably give you the coverage you need however its not widely available. Could a wireless bridge be used? Might be able to pick one up relatively cheaply but the plugs might give better performance.

If you move the point it will probably cause the problem area to move somewhere else.

Perhaps I'm mad here, but what's wrong with a length of coaxial cable to move the UPC modem somewhere else? That and a couple of f-connectors which are easy to prepare (only need a wire cutter or even scissors) would cost the guts of a few euro.

fifty euro for a fellow to call out to your house get up on a ladder and move a cable. To be honest that's a great price.
