re-taxing car

    hi everyone,
got a car in 2008 and about 1 month later changed departments in my job that gave me a work car.

I put the car I got into our shed and it's sat there since.

Now my company has said that from the new year onward all company cars will be gone due to cuts in spending.

So now I will have to use car I got couple of years ago. It was never taxed in my name as there was about 2 months left when I got it. so tax and nct ran out end of 2008.
Do I just go into tax office and take my owner papers and insurance details and re-tax then book for a nct, or is it going to be a nightmare of form filling? does anyone know or had this problem before?
would love to hear your thoughts....cheers!

First get insurance for that car.
    Book your NCT.
Then get your VRC, get RF100 (motor tax renewal form) fill it in, declare a period in which you didn't use a car on a public road, go to garda station to sing and stamp it, go to motor tax office to tax it.
If you say your NCT was expired something in end of 2008, so if do NCT now, you will get it to the end of 2012.
Pretty much there isn't any excees of paper work and everything should go smooth.

Just remember, that driving a car without a valid tax or NCT is an offence, and if you get pulled over, it's all to good will of garda who stops you to let you go when you explain f.e. that you are just waiting for your NCT appointment.

You will need to visit your local Garda Station and sign a declaration of non use. This is part of the tax application form. If you don't do this you will be stung for 2 years of back taxes.

I agree with other 2 posters a friend of mine had to do something similar recently with regards road tax (he still had NCT in date) and the Gardai were pretty helpful in fairness didnt give him hassle as to why the car was off the road etc! I would advise to head down to Garda station and they will tell you exactly what you need to do but it has defo been done before so don't sweat it too much id say.

    Good Luck

While yours is a genuine case of being off the road and you will rightly avoid the 2 years tax by getting form signed by garda, dont be tempted to drive the car without tax in the mean time as if you did happen to b stopped by a garda, you wouldnt have a leg to stand on and would be made tax it for the 2 years (they may even take the car there and then) and also give you a fine.
