Ever been to Bali?

Just wondering if anyone has travelled to Bali on their own? Was it easy to get around and safe? I want to go there for a few days on my way to Sydney for a holiday. I'd like to take in some yoga classes, meditations etc and basically chill out before going to Sydney.
Can you recommend places to stay, best way to get there etc? I'm currently thinking of flying via Singapore.
I'm not used to travelling alone- normally go to visit friends etc so this is a new experience for me and want it to be as easy and relaxing as possible.
    Thanks a lot!

Its not as relaxing as you think. You have people coming up to you ALL the time trying to sell you stuff.

If you're happy with just doing some yoga and generally relaxing, then go to a place called Ubud in the centre of the island.

But I can think of other places to go in SE Asia on your way. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY never want to set foot in Indonesia again. I spent 2 months there last winter, and it was digusting, full of hassle, and any touristy areas where there is decent infrastructure (e.g. Bali) are ruined.

If you would like to relax, I would suggest Laos. It beautiful, with nice food, amazing secnery and the most peaceful, respecting people I have ever encountred in years of travelling. There are backpackers, but not too many.

You can fly there from Kuala Lumpur with airasia.com for very cheap if you decide to go to Oz via KL.

If you decide to go to Sydney via Bangok, you could get into Laos overland.

I left Bali early at the end of my trip as I was so dismayed with Indonesia as a whole. I got money sent over from home to pay for the airfare to Laos (I had been there earlier in my trip), via Kuala Lumpur, as I wanted to end the 5 month trip on a peaceful, enjoyable note. Much of Bali is filthy. The people are relentless in their hassling (though not as bad as other parts of Indonesia).

I would urge you to pick somewhere else to relax on your way to Oz. Seriously.

(Before anyone jumps down my throat, I know that there are pleasant parts of Bali, but these are way more expensive than the run-of-the-mill places that us humble backpackers can afford).

Oh yeah, Laos is seriously cheap as well.

Great thanks...I have heard Laos is amazing alright. Will definitely keep it in mind- Thanks for that. I've only got 3 wks in total such a short time but one of these days i'll take a few months to travel more.

Avoid Kuta, its a hellhole. Ubud is a nice place to visit to see some more authentic Bali.
