Someone asked me this the other day

"If you import a car and it was registered/built in 1910 and you wanted a county reg, would you just end up with 10 D xxxxx, like a modern car?"

he had a point and I said I'd ask here!

    I.M.O.
I don’t think the authorities are going to try to invest in making the system differentiate between 1910 and 2010 – there can hardly be many 1910 cars due to be imported here in the future.
I would assume they would insist on a ZV and refuse the option of a 10-XX-XXX reg.
Although you might get some civil servant robot who just goes through the motions and might not cop it and issue it with a 10 plate – I would imagine that car would have to be up to the standard of any other ‘10’ reg car – 2013 NCT time would be some crack. No catalytic convertor, no ABS, no 3rd brake light, no airbags and I would imagine the emissions would be pretty bad also!!!!!!

They'll dish out a new format 10 plate, unless a ZV is requested.

As they are dealt with sequentially, a ZV would be preferable... now.

There isnt much chance of anyone mistaking a 1910 car for a 2010 car anyway.

Unless people saw the 10 reg and thought it was a kit-type replica car.

And what about 2013.... will the superstitious amongst us buy a 13 WX?. 13 WW etc????

Thinking about ordering special Number Plates for a new 13 WX car.....

13 WX 666 - that would be funny!!!!! A big evil looking black jeep or something (a dodge.... or some other demonic looking thing)

Perhaps so,but its still sort of half arsed isnt it. What will happen in years to come when theres more registrations of each new year around.

I guess it will just be reversed, like 1234D10

You cant even if you wanted to,your esteemed Lord Mayor automatically gets it.
You cant order registrations untill the November of the preceding year also. Only a week or so to go Corky, for 11C2! :D

They didnt put any thought into the system in the first place...i.e. they never seemed to consider duplication of numbers.

The reversed system is already in use for trade plates - i.e. I recently spotted the trade plate '198-D-10'

dead right they put no thought into it!
It would take a seperate thread altogether to list all the stupidity in that system (but heres one...why SO for Sligo when theres no S but C for Cork when you have CE for Clare?)

Because C(Cork), D(Dublin), L(Limerick city), G(Galway), W(Waterford) were the County Borough Councils, basically the Cities/bigger towns. All the others were the County Councils. Cork used to have both County and Borough Councils but they became combined in 1985.

There is an S in Sligo?
