2008 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Auto, opinions?

    Folks,

Spotted a nice spec'd 2008 Mondeo Titanium 2.0 TDCi auto for sale. Only thing is that it is for sale in Dublin and as the auto is rare enough I haven't really had the opportunity to drive one over this side of the country. Anyone got any opinions on the Mondeo auto? Are they any good or best avoided?

One of my main concerns is that 9 out of 10 Mondeos sold in this country seem be manual, plus the fact that it also costs €447 to tax per year on the new system which has me thinking that the car could be difficult to sell on in a few years given Ireland's obsession with low tax manual cars.

Mondeo 'autos' are not true automatics at all; they are the same as VWs DSG gearbox, so are still prone to DMF failue and clutch failure like a traditional manual gearbox.

In theory, because the clutch is controlled by electronics, it and the DMF should last longer than in a manual gearbox.

Most 2.0 TDCi Mondeos are unfortunately in tax band D for the manual and tax band E for the Powershift model.

Later models were in bands C and D and the latest version is in bands B and C respectively for manual and Powershift.

    Any link?

Not many of those around, and one was ours for a good while.

Lovely car to drive, was terminated early by the original driver and we used it whenever someone needed an auto, so it was here there and everywhere - but I got to drive it quite a lot.

I like the way the Mondeo drives, and the Autobox is nice a smooth. Only issue we had with the motor was the start button needed replacing, but that went on all the 08 Titanium's we have on fleet.

    FYP

In 2008 it wasn't a Powershift box though.

    Not ours, but looks good.

The one we had ended up down your neck of the woods earlier this year.

Looks nice for an Irish Mondeo.

If these came with an actual auto, I wonder why Volvos with the same engine never got it?

Wasn't aware of that. I always thought they only used Powershift for all Mk 4 Mondeos, no?

(I knew the Mk 3 was a traditional auto)

When did they change to Powershift?

The main purpose of this communication is to provide you with details of the new PowerShift transmission which is introduced at 2010.5 MY (March/April Production)

Above is from a Ford communication, so it was only a few months ago it got the Powershift.

Weird, as Volvo had them in the middle of 2009 in the S40, if not earlier.

Because the engine in the Mondeo is NOT the same engine used by Volvo.

There are two different 2.0 diesels developed by Ford and PSA.

The engine in the Mondeo is used in the Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy and Jaguar X-Type not to mention the Ford Transit. This is a Ford designed engine, and is based on the 2.0 TDdi engine that made its debut in the 2000 MY Transit, and later the Mk3 Mondeo. The only thing PSA related about this engine is the use of common rail technology. It's the same as what Ford did for the DLD18, they used PSA common rail technology to an engine that has its origins in the Sierra and Mk1/Mk2 Mondeo.

The 2.0 diesel in the Focus and C-Max, any Volvo, Peugeot and Citroen is a Peugeot diesel engine with nothing in common with the engine in the Mondeo.

I think the latest Euro V TDCI engine in the Mondeo is the same as the one found in PSA cars and Volvos, but all earlier versions of the 2.0 TDCi in the Mondeo(and X-Type, Transit, Galaxy and S-Max) are most certainly not.

My buddy is a rep in covering most of SE England. He has a Zetec (with loads of options) spec car with that engine and a 6 speed manual. Drove it the other night and it's stood up to the mileage well (104k miles) and has never given dpf, dmf or injector issues. Coming up for sale soon and I'm actually tempted for the price its going for. No ratles or knocking of any kind. Good power too.

My father has a Titanium X spec Mondeo and you could ask for very little more in terms of spec. Nice solid cars and feel a lot smaller than they are when you're behind the wheel so ignore the size of it. Will have parking sensors on all corners anyway;)

Wikipedia disagrees, and says the PSA based engine was always in the S-Max and Galaxy. This engine is 1997 cc instead of the older engine's 1998. Honestjohn shows the S-Max and Galaxy with the 1997, the Mondeo with the 1998.

I think I recall that my 2008 S-Max's motor is the PSA job, and I'll check the capacity later.

Thanks guys, some good info here, always thought the Mk IV Mondeo used PSA diesel engines only (bar 1.8 litre). Maybe the Ford unit doesn't suffer from DPF issues like the PSA units do? Recently got stung for a new DPF in the S40 so would like to avoid that again if possible.

    Hi bazz26,
Most of the modern diesels today have dpf's..dmf's...
As captainspeed has said psa have been working with ford on certain diesel models....

Thanks Row. It just seems that I am reading that the PSA/Ford engines tend to need their DPFs replaced alot more than say Honda, BMW...
