I am planning to change over to UPC because my landline will never support more that 2mb Broadband. I am also planning to install a Linksys SPA3102 VoIP gateway to route calls out over the internet through someone like Voipcheap.com.

UPC have the call bundle Anytime World for €12 which gives me unlimited landline calls.

Skype have all Irish calls for €5.99 but I'd need a PC powered up 24 x 7 x 365 since all Skype gateways seem to need to connect via a PC to the internet.

Blueface have the Ireland/UK Unlimited but that's €14.99 although an option could be their Free Calls for Life promotion at €199 including the Gigaset Handset

Has anyone any suggestions please ?

If you go with UPC, you will not need the Linksys ATA. They will supply you with the equipment. If you decide to just get UPC broadband, you can get an ATA off Ebay for about €25. I use Blueface through UPC broadband. Paid the yearly fee of €150 for the Ireland/UK Unlimited. Never had a problem.

I want to keep my old landline number so I guess I still need phone service from UPC. I assume their ATA doesn't allow you to program up any routing based on destinations ? So my plan was to install a Linksys SPA3102 (is there anything better) to channel off calls to whatever provider I want to use, beit Voipcheap or Blueface or whoever.

You can port your old number to UPC or Blueface. I bought an ATA, ported over my number to Blueface (using my UPC broadband), and got rid of my landline altogther. Check the Blueface website - there is some information on moving to them etc.

In costs, UPC will be Phone €6 + Anytime World €12 whereas Blueface would be Phone €0 +Ireland/UK Unlimited €15 - OK, a saving of €3 p/m. Only problem I see is that if Blueface goes down, I've lost both in and out bound whereas I can always fallback to UPC voice.

Is Blueface the only VoIP provider that does unlimited Calls to Irish Landlines at a fixed cost bundle ?

Though I had it all sussed until I looked at my last phonebill (with Vodafone - originally BT). I downloaded my last bill and added up the minutes of the Free Calls. They totaled just about 500 minutes. By sizing this up against someone like SmartVoIP.com, this would cost me in the region of €3 - €4 compared to the €10 I pay Vodafone for my "Free Calls" option.

Basically folks, have I missed something ?
