Grants for tuition fees doing PGCE in England

    Hi -
I'm hoping to apply to do the PGCE somewhere in England in 2011/2012. My teaching subjects are maths and cspe. I know I'm entitled to a £9000 bursary because maths is an 'in-demand' subject (providing this doesn't decrease in the next budget, fingers crossed!) but I was wondering if anyone has any experience in applying for grants to cover the fees? The irish grant only covers undergraduate courses in england and the english student finance system seems to amount to no more than a student loan. Will I just have to pay the fees?? I'm hoping to use the bursary for rent & living expenses etc. Thanks for any help you can give me

I did the PGCE in Cardiff in 2007 and got a teacher training wage of £7500 stg.

This was paid at the beginning of each month, £750 per month for the first 8 months and then a double payment of £1500 in the last month of the course.

My fees at the time were £1200 and yes, I had to pay them. Didnt get any kind of grant
I think the fees are gone up to ~£1800 now

The PGCE is much better course than the PGDE here in Ireland if you ask me both in terms of financial support, relevance of subjects studied and amount of teaching experience gained during the course.

    PGDE costs over 6000 euro

PGCE costs £1800 stg with a teacher training wage of ~£7,500

This equals net profit of about 6500 euro.
    No brainer

I'm doing it at the moment. I qualified for a fees loan (roughly £4000), and got the bursary too (£6000 for my subject).

You could try for Back to Education Allowance, as it covers the PGCE, but it might be difficult to qualify.

    Otherwise, I'd recommend saving up!

Titania, which University are you doing your PGCE in at the moment?

I'm very interested in doing my PGCE in the UK but there's so many universities to choose from, i'm baffled!

Also, did you find it difficult making a transition from the Irish curriculum to the English one? If it makes any difference, I would be doing the PGCE in English
