How do start here. First, I want to say, that its not a good idea for one to drop out of College because the world is gradually graduating faster to a world for the educated.

However, sometime an unexpected personal situation could left one with no another option but to deferred or drop out.

In such a case could you ask the College to atleast reward your years spent with a Certificate or a Diploma? example if you drop out in the final year of your degree.

My finding in the Irish Education website indicated that 2year in the College should end one a Certificate.

Please your comment is very important.

    Hi Tomm,

Unfortunately no is the answer. The degree programmes in DCU are designed as 3 or 4 year Honours degree programmes with no opt out option.

There is a new structure to be implemented over the next few years according to European Structure requirements, which should allow for some kind of recognition for 2/3 years completion of a course. But at present and for the immediate future, the answer to your question is no.

HOWEVER, you should still check this with your Course Chairperson and/or The Registry.

If it due to personal reasons, perhaps you could consider taking a year or two out and come back to finish it when you're in a better position.

They can issue what they want to be honest. A cert or diploma wouldn't worth the paper it would be written on.

Why would it be better than just putting that you attended college for a number of years on your CV?

Except in the most extreme of cases, which you alluded to, this would be a bad idea.... rewarding a lack of achievement.

    That for the info Stringy;;;

Such intervention from the EU would surely brings smiles onto the faces of the students who are trapped in courses they hated and with no way of getting out to what they like due to previous Modules and rules...../

Some Colleges dont seems to understand that a student should be free to change courses and colleges.
    And that it healed.

    Hi Tomm,

Some colleges are very good at facilitating internal transfers, DCU especially. If you think you're in the wrong course, you should talk to your course chairperson and the careers service. DCU will do their best to assist you in finding something you are really interested in studying. The last thing they want is a drop out statistic. Also if there is another uni or college you would like to attend, you do have a number of ECTS credits obtained and transfers between colleges happen quite often.

Dont Blanch IT have something like this? Each year you got a diploma and ended with a degree?

No idea what the course was like but it seemed like a great idea, as people say you can find the course not to be your liking.

Well putting nothing, obviously the worst solution. Putting the years gives a sense you did something but no idea what. Having a diploma that says say "Foundational Accounting Practices" gives at least an idea of what you are like *shrugs*

Yea DCU will let you transfer to a new course once you have the correct points for it. It's very easy to do, you just need a signature from the head of your current course andthe head of course wish to move to. The only problem is depending on how long you did the course for you will need to pay full fees. 5,500 for each year, half if you only did one semester.

Yeah you are right, transfering is possible but it seem to be more easier to get a transfer to the course of your choice only if you have done a subject related to the new course you are going for.

But, my opinion (just as one person rightly observed here) is, the Universities should be willing and ready to award any students with a certificate or a diploma if a student could not complete the final course but passed some some years.

In so doing the student could then move to any course of his/her choice internally or externally while still having something to certified the acheivement previously, not just a a result slip or whatever.

Any year passed in the University should not just be too easy to be un honoured.
If am not mistaking, the Department of Education addressed this years and certificate issue on their site but dont understand why college dont respect it.

Sometime the Student union dont take on hard cases.
