Hi im a leaving cert student weighing up my options and i was just wonderin which course is right for me, digital media or media studies.

I am a keen videographer and im interested in digital media but im worried that there might be too much theory and less practical in it, hence why im leaning towards media studies. But is the media course any good?

Which one is the overall better course? any help would be really appreciated :)

    cheers, mik

Hi! I've just started Digital Media this year so I can't really speak for media studies but we have a two hour practical session in Kairos studios once a week,I don't know if media studies has any more than that..digital media is quite techy, there's a strong emphasis on computer science modules

Yeh the computer science and programming is a bit dawnting and im not quite sure if i will like it.

Is there a lot of video editing and other media aspects in digital media or is it mainly based on the theory and computer scienc?

Maybe media studies is a better option for what i want to do ?

BA Multimedia (or Digital Media as it's apparently called now... I DO NOT WELCOME CHANGE) so far has been, as mentioned, mainly computer based. On Fridays we've been making videos, getting to grips with the cameras and stuff, basically learning about different types of shots and such. That module is "Digital Video Production". The editing has been left up to the pros at the Studio to do - we don't do the editing until the second semester, ie "Sound and Video Editing". The only other media aspect we've been doing this semester is "Reading New Media", about analyzing texts and stuff, which is good craic because there's a seminar too. But yeah, everything else has been largely computer science related.
Sorry if I'm rambling here, by the by... my head hurts.

Hey, I'm in third year media! We have two hours a week in Kairos too - video and radio editing, radio and tv production, in studio and documentaries. The course is mainly theory based, although there is also a scriptwriting module in second year, which is a good chance to get creative with a bit of guidance!

Media Studies, overall, I think has very little emphasis on production - you learn the bare minimum really. Here's a camera, there's the on button, now go record a documentary. In the radio modules, you never get to do anything with the technical aspects really (apart from some basic editing in first year). It's more about content.

Most of the modules are theory, history, law, policy, some journalism. Essay writing is really important too. Unfortunately ;)

    Hope that helps! :)

that sounds good will deffinately consider it for the cao. :)

sorry for all the questions but how does maynooth compare to the likes of dcu?

i hear they have a lot of spare time to work on personal projects and get involved in dcufm and other organisations. is that the same for maynooth?

i am considering doing an MA (media based) afterwards so i want to cram as much experience as possible in the 3 years.

thanks for all the help! greatly appreciated
