I have been running my 3GS on iOS 3.1 for over a year now.

I have never bothered upgrading the OS as it worsk perfectly for me on the older software, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

However, there are a few features of OS4 that are making me think of upgrading. Before I do so however I want to check if anybody has had a problem with the 3GS (not 3G) on 4.1.

If I switch, I want it to be an upgrade, not a downgrade!!

    same here , I have a 3gs and i have no problems with ios4.1

make sure you do a few reboots after upgrade to get things to settle
    in.

it even runs faster then 3.1

Can't say that i've noticed an increase in speed following my 3gs upgrade to ios4 but i'd say overall its worth doing for the benefits of being able to place common apps into folders.
I've gone from 8 pages of apps to 3 pages now, well pleased with that.
Battery life is more or less the same.
Multitasking is limited but useful at times
    I'd say go for it.

wifi is gone to the dogs (lots of cannot join network) and bookmarking of audiobooks has gotten very flaky, playback of big audio files (audiobooks) has started to stutter when the iphone is docked needing a reboot I would chalk 4.1 down as a bad upgrade for me, no benefit just problems that dis not exist before the upgrade. Battery life is a little better and more consistent.
