PAYPAL QUESTION

I'm going live with my first website next week and I will be using Paypal initially to accept payments, moving to Realex eventually.

The thing is, I don't have a credit card as I use my wife's one. I never wanted or needed one.

I do have a Personal Paypal Account set up since last year using my wife's credit card "her Credit Card is the one used on my Paypal Account", to purchase online. But I was wondering, will it affect my online business in any way by me not having my own credit card and using Paypal?

I phoned up Paypal and the lady said that I could use a Debit Card instead, but when I told her that Paypal don't accept Debit cards in Ireland she just told me that I could use my Debit Card instead:confused:.
It went on like this for a while until I said OK and thank you.

I personally didn't think it mattered once I had an account already set up, I'm just covering my bases at this stage, preparing for Murphy's law to kick in.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks.

You could get a 3V card which would solve all the problems

No, it's nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Have you setup paypal on your website yet? Basically, you log in to paypal, click on "Merchant Tools" generate a "Buy Now" or "Checkout" button witha few clicks and copy the generated button to your site. When users click that "Buy Now" button you'll get an email and the funds are in your paypal account. You can then withdraw by bank transfer, cheque etc.

If you haven't already seen it, check out www.webpayments.ie... really good site. I think the guy who runs it is on boards too.

    Thanks for the replies.

My website has not gone live yet, I'm waiting for my web developer to finish it.

Do I have to wait until my site is finished before I set it up with Paypal?

    Thanks again.

No, you actually need to set up your paypal stuff first because your dev will need the info you get when you complete the setup in order to enable it on your site. Do you know what ecommerce system your site will be using?

The main reason you need a credit card attached is when you setup the account on paypal they charge you a small setup fee initially (I tihnk its €5) and then after that anytime you owe fees to paypal and there isnt money in the account they charge it to your credit card. Its more for security than anything else but you will need one for paypal if you are setting up an account and plan to run a business through it.

Axwell, would I get away with just using my wifes Credit Card?

Its already the one that I use on my personal account with Paypal.

I applied to MBNA a few weeks ago for my own credit card but I was rejected. I am a Taxi driver at present and the money that I earn is the money that we live on for the week. My wifes wages gets put into the bank. I was told that there is no way of proving how much money that I earn/or don't.

This is something that you're never told, that you need a credit card to open an online store.

I will try to set it up anyway and see how it goes. Fingers crossed.

No to the best of my knowledge it will tell you that the card is already attached to another Paypal account. What you could look to do is take the credit card off the personal account and add a 3v card to it so that you could still make purchases if needed on the personal account (its basically a card you top up that can be used as a credit/debit card). Then add the credit card to the new account you plan to use for the business.

My wife just named me as an authorised user on her CC, so maybe that will help, but it takes 7 days.

I should have sorted this out a while ago I know, but I just thought they'd let me just upgrade my account and keep letting me use my wifes cc.

But the credit card will still be attached to the other account. You wont be able to have one card attached to 2 accounts so you will still need to move it over to the new account as far as im aware.

So I cant use 1 credit card for both the Personal Paypal Account and the Premier Paypal account??

Most people only have one CC.

Could I not go back and change the card details on the Personal Account.

Or even cancel the Personal Account?

But surely the Personal Account is know gone, and has become the Premier Account.

    Very confusing.

If you can upgrade the personal account thats differe, you will have to check.

I am going on the basis of what you said above which is setting up a seperate account. If you set up a seperate account you register it to an email address which will have to be a different email address than the personal account, then you add a credit card and it will tell you this credit card is in use already. So you either remove the credit card from the personal account and replace it with a 3V card, upgrade the personal account if possible..or just close the personal account and setup the business one and use it for everything.

    Thanks for the advice.

I think I'll go with the cancel the old account and just use the new one(Premier). I'll let you know how it goes.
