Problem with accountant

Hi folks I have a problem with the Accountant I have been using for the last few years. A friend recomended a different Accountant which I went with because of lower fees etc. He has wrote to my old Accountant several times looking for my Purchase files and called him but he wont send them of. I am really getting annoyed now because its coming up near the end of the year and my tax must be paid.

Is there a governing body I can make a complaint against him. I have called him several times and his secretary keeps fobbing me off. Any advise on what I should do.

    Thanks folks.

Call to his office and don't leave until you have the files!

Yes there is - but you'll need to find out what body he is with first to make it easier for you (assuming he is a qualified accountant).

    Try what Tenchi suggests first..

Before you contact his professional body, give him notice that is your next step. Hopefully that will bring him to his senses.

Do you have a letter of enagement from your original dealings with him, that should tell you who to complain to.

    Or is he

    Chartered
    Certified
    Certified Public
    or Incorporated Public

giving us that much information would allow somebody here to give you the postal address to send a complaint to.

It should be written on the door of his office or even his letterhead paper.. it's the type of thing most accountants like to advertise!

When you say purchase files, do you mean invoices and statements? Anything like that is your property and aside from complaining to a body, you are legally entitled to them.

As for working papers, trial balances and other things the accountant has done, once you have paid your fees up to date, then he should be releasing to your new accountant and a complaint to his professional body should sort it out.

If he did annual accounts for you, look at the accountants report it will probably say "Chartered Accountant" if he is in Charterd Accountants Ireland. "Certified Chartered Accountant" If he is in ACCA, or "Certified Public Accountant if he is in CPA Ireland.
