Specific Charger v Universal Charger

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 for almost 4 years now and although it had stopped charging and I get blue screen 3 out of 4 times upon start up, it's still quite a good machine. The charger at the moment is fecked. Smoke is coming from the input and sparks fly off it when I move it. It has now also stopped powering the computer, so I need a new one.

I've been looking at the Dell website and found a charger for the one I've incinerated. It probably is the same one, but has gotten terrible reviews (1.2/5 People say it doesn't last a year). It's €64 which is only a little less than a universal charger. For an extra €15 would you be more inclined to go for the universal? How reliable are they? What's a good brand?

Well I got a Trust universal charger from Back From The Future on Aungier St 12-18 months ago. E70-80 I think. Works fine, has connection for lots of manufacturers. No problems at all with it. Would have preferred a smaller one for travel though.

I would go universal as it sounds like you may be getting a new laptop soon enough

Just a word of warning - I also own a 9400 but have had problems with non-dell branded chargers/batteries.

If you buy the universal adapter you'll get a message on the screen telling you that the 9400 will run at a reduced performance as it's not an official charger. It's dell's own way of ensuring they make more money out of you ;).
