    Hi,

Anyone know why all trains (including DARTs) reduce their speed significantly when travelling between Dun Laoghaire - Sandycove/Glasthle stations, in both directions? Seem to go at about 10kmph or less.

    Thanks.

to reduce noise and vibration cos of the proximity of housing to the cutting, isn't it?

a ridiculous reason if true (there's not that many actual houses alongside the cutting anyway)

Its quite a windy bit of track there, but the low speed limit is ridiculous, you could get out and walk quicker.

Its only a guess of mine as to the reason but seems plausible to me, If you're walking beside it in the section its very loud as the walls seem to amplify the sound

The state of the track could be another reason, it's on of the few sections that has no sleepers iirc, just a solid concrete basework

true that its on concrete, would image that noise is the reason... would be interesting to know for sure what the reason is

I haven't seen a weekly circular for a long time - is there an engineering speed restriction on the line? I know the slab track was a bad job from day one and they have done some work on it but at snail's pace as can be imagined due the difficulties in getting possessions, digging up concrete etc. Might see if I can get a weekly circular later and will report back.

Isn't that section supposed to be slated to be decked over? I could have sworn I read something along those lines - or was it the local council looking for it to be done?

some of it is being covered over but I don't think the plan to fully cover from DL to Sandycove Dart will happen at this stage

They should cover the entire section from Sandycove to Dunlaoghaire.

It will be the nearest ever we will ever get to Dart Underground. :p

There is a permanent speed restriction of 30mph through Dun Laoghaire station, 20mph from Dun Laoghaire to Sandycove/Glasthule and rising again to 30mph from Sandycove to beyond Dalkey due to the curvature of the track and the slab track section.

However, there is currently a temporary speed restriction of 10mph from Dun Laoghaire to Sandycove/Glasthule. This I would think may be linked to the installation of the decking overhead.
