There'd be no problem if you've one of these.

Where does the propulsion come from? The tyre thread skimming the surface?

Dynamo on the rear wheel connected via the cable you can see to a propulsion device/propeller attached to the front wheel by the looks of it

Yeah, looks a bit odd, the front wheel is driving the propellor...or something. And the back wheel is driving the front wheel.

Did no-one tell them you could just turn the bike around....?

Seems like the ideal place for a flip-flop hub with a chain running from the fixed cog downwards to a cog driving the prop.

There appears to be something clamped to the seat tube and resting against the back wheel, presumably connected to some sort of propeller by the black cable that runs down to the bottom of the front wheel.
    What Beasty said.

OP There have been improvements to the canal tow-paths near Dublin and there are threads on here discussing that so it'd be worth using the search function to see what you can turn up. I've followed the Royal Canal from Castleknock out as far as Maynooth and it's certainly doable for that stretch but you'd want an MTB or fairly rugged hybrid, and there are some quite tight sections between Castleknock and Clonsilla with a very long drop down to the canal.

There was a thread on it a while back, it looks like they're going to paint a bicycle symbol in the hard shoulders of our national roads. Document here, I haven't read it but now with some of the national roads being downgraded to regional status and with hard shoulders on them it makes sense to paint them white and put a couple of bicycle/ walk symbols on them. When you hit a town there'll be more random white lining and they're developing some of the old railways, which is really good, I went on one in Wales and enjoyed it. It'll be fantastic when it's all done.
