That really annoys me when they give you a crap quote as an existing customer but if you put in every the same as a new customer its cheaper.

They have changed the insurance company they deal with.

Insurance has risen across the board.

6 months ago online quotes for me on the ST were around €600, now they are coming up as around €900.

This is the same across all the companies.

Not all went up, mine went down, renewed on Oct 2nd and it went from €550 or €498 (with One Direct)

That may be a factor, but the flooding events last year, and the big freeze of early this year makes for a sh1tload of claims which has emptied their reserves. My car insurance stayed about the same (even though I had changed from a 2.2 petrol to a (new)1.5 diesel) in May, but my house insurance went from 300 in Sep 2009 to 450 this year. That's a hell of a jump. I did shop around and (for once) the renewal quote was actually the best I could get.

Normally, both my motor and house renewal letters contain a figure that absolutely takes the p1ss, but as soon as you ring them up about it they're able to magically reduce the premium to something approaching what a new customer would get.

A bit off topic, but you can reduce your house insurance by reducing the rebuilding costs; these have fallen over the last few years. I was able to pare down my house insurance by €50 by reducing the rebuild sum assured.

Are all the details the same between the renewal and the web quote? My renewal with 123 came last month and if I put the same details in to the website, I got the same quote.

The value they had was a bit high for my car, so I dropped it and it came the same from the website and customer service. Was the same last year - web quote matched my renewal notice.

They were also quite a bit cheaper than anyone else I priced for the same level of cover.

I don't understand why people tend to get worked up by this. I always shop around irrespective of what my renewal comes in at. The company that offers the best cover at the best price gets my business. I give no loyalty to insurance companies the same way they don't give loyalty to me to retain my business.

BTW I have rarely stayed with the same company for consecutive years.

im not expecting loyalty but at least they could have the online quote and the one they sent me out in the post the same.. of course im going to shop around.. i do every year.

thats the way to do it of course but it does annoy me that no insurance company seem to give a damn about loyalty. Few match other companies better quotes to keep you and they end up losing a customer and the same customer tell all their friend that "x are a shower of tight ****ers, I wouldn't touch them again. Don't give a damn about their customers" etc etc
    Not good for business

my renewal with aviva this year was €460 down from €500 last year,
(this was to cover me and my partner fully comp with NCD protected, and free windscreen repair.)
they gave me numerous discounts, including an 8% renewal and two 20% discounts for no penalty points and 2 years no claims, and a discount for having my partner on my insurance,

the cheapest quote i got from 123.ie was €800 for me on my own,

so i went with Aviva, when i dropped into their offices to pay them, they added on a discretionary discount, so in total i paid €400.

Insurance companies are like mobile phone companies, they offer great deals for first time customers but do very little to retain those customers.

Rang them recently, was told there was no point getting a quote unless it was being taken on the spot, as they are changing underwriters at the moment (as stated above) and some prices are going up while others are going down.

My sister's bf has a Lotus Elise (111r - 190 bhp toyota VVTLi engine) and he checked out the websites the other day putting everything on a year (age, no claims etc) and the quote went from €2,400 it is at the moment to €4,500

If it stays like this there will be an Elise for sale in Feb '11!

Mine went up this year but after a bit of haggling I got it renewed at a slightly less than last years price.

Another thing I only found out this year that is if you are insured with Axa and have a credit union a/c you can pay monthly with no interest/charges being applied.

Tell him to forget online quotes and use the phone.
