I have a broken tooth for the last few years and I recently started getting pains it so I went to the dentist. Turns out I have an infection in it and after a week of antibiotics I might have to get root canal done or have it extracted. I dont know which is worse, I heard root canal is very painful and it might eventually have to taken out anyway. Has anyone anyone any ideas on which is the less painful option??? I hate going to the dentist and I am freaking out!!!!!

Root canal isnt painful if the dentist gives you an injection in the gum at the tooth. I didnt feel anything much when I got mine done.
I heard that in the past they didnt use as much painkiller, so the dentist would know from the pain, when they have hit the live nerve.
If that was true i could imagine that being very painful alright!

I had 2 root canals done 2 years ago. It was well worth it, because it saved my teeth and i didnt need to get implants as a result.

I've had a few root canal treatments over the years and never felt any discomfort - part from my mouth getting tired from being open for so long!

If you're worried just ask the dentist to make sure that they give you enough anaesthetic, but they generally do that anyway.

Terrible teeth and a number of root canals. No pain, ever. Agree that the only discomfort was an aching jaw from keeping my mouth open!

Can anyone advise on possible side effects. I had one done last week and am in extrme pain. I've been back and prescribed Difene, but still the pain is unbearable.

Is this normal, how long more will it last. I'm told there is no infection and all looks ok and if I'm still in pain in a few days, she will redo the filling.

The pain is a sharp pain and my whole face feels like it has been punched. It is worse than childbirth !!!!!!
(I had one done a few years ago and didnt have any of this trouble).

Finally Difene seems to be an anti-inflamatory, but how good is it as a painkiller.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could advise me as to the recovery time for a root canal? Have been searching around the net but am coming across very different answers - anything from a couple of hours to weeks on end! I hate asking for time of work and was wondering if I get the treatment done on a Monday afternoon, would I be ok to return to work on Tuesday?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!!:)

Had one done between 10.30am and 1.30pm in Galway, went shopping afterwards, then went for a picnic.

Came home that evening to Limerick and did 3 hours work that night :D:D:D

I took one painkiller before I left the endodontists and didn't need or take any more.

I actually found the crown more uncomfortable than the root canal.

Yep Endodontists (root canal specialists) have the knack

I'd have to agree with that. I went to an Endodontist a few weeks back for a root canal and even though he said the nerves/roots? were quite inflamed he kept the discomfort to a total minimum. By that evening it was as if I had nothing done at all. It is expensive but as has been said here many times it was really worth it.

I am getting mine crowned next week but the filling that he did after my root canal is exceptional given that a lot of the tooth had broken away. I have a fully functioning tooth at the moment when I thought I would have to get it out.

Thanks so much for the replies guys - you've really put my mind at ease! While my own dentist said that he would be happy to carry out the procedure, I decided I'd play it safe and go to an endodontist. It is more expensive but hopefully it will be worth it. Now I just can't wait for it all to be over - waking up every night with visions of drills and needles!! And I think I've definitely learnt the lesson to stay away from google before a procedure - too many horror stories!!

Thank you again for the replies, I really appreciate it. ....And shopping and a picnic sounds like the perfect reward for getting through the treatment!:)

Root canal is the way to go ...if you want to keep your tooth. Shop around and include NI for the best deal. It's a harmless procedure. In fact my old dentist was so easy going about it that i cannot believe people make such a deal out of it!!

Rarely do lowest price or great deals and highest quality go hand in hand. Its a painless procedure but to do an excellent job takes a lot of skill, time. Specialist endodontists defo do the best root canal treatments but they cost a bit more.

If the root canal is not good it may not be apparent for many years, then your stuck with an expensive crown on top of an infection with may have to be replaced or damaged to redo the root canal. Its like the foundations of a house. You would pay a lot more for the re treatment than getting it done correctly the first time.

I'm one of those over analytical individuals as well. I spent so much time reading, reading, reading. And I had worked myself into an awful state.

The folks here were incredible. Fitzgeme and Ballsy and others here were very helpful and reassuring.

The endodontist told me to load up my MP3 with music and just sit back and listen to the music while the procedure was being done.

In the nights leading up to the procedures I was very nervous. I took a xanax the night before to help me sleep. Had more to take if I needed them during the procedure but I honestly didn't need to.

I'm a busy person, rarely get time out. Even on the way up to Galway I had to take an "urgent" call from work. The 3 hours in the chair listing to my favourite music was probably the longest time I'd had to relax in ages. The needles weren't at all bad and they were over quickly. And if I needed an air break or a loo break, there was absolutely no problem. The endodontist was very pleasant, understanding and accommodating.

Good luck with your procedure. And after you get the crown, insist that everyone call you "Yer Maj" :p:p:p

Hi guys. I got a deep filling in one of my premolar teeth a year ago with no problems until yesterday. I went to my dentist today because I couldn't sleep last night due to the pain. The dentist has advised me that I have an abscess and gave my a 'script for anti biotics. I have 2 options after that which is either extraction or root canal treatment. I'm at odds which option to go for. The root canal will cost approximately €650 whereas the extraction will be a lot cheaper. The tooth is not fully in my smile line so I'm thinking of extraction. What do you think? Is the cost of root canal expensive enough to warrant extraction?

it'll be the last thing that breaks down when you're long buried!

by the way the anti biotics are a very expensive placebo as far as i'm concerned!! I had a bad one before xmas and was prescribed antib's...very expensive ones! Long story short i waited too long for the root canal treatment and the pain came back....this time i just used painkillers (which you need anyway) and the pain healed in the same amount of time.

Oh my gosh Bicycle, you sound like my double! I spent days researching the procedure and ended up finding tons of horror stories about root canals gone wrong. The thing is though, these stories don't actually appear on very reputable websites....I think some people might just get a kick out of scaremongering!
I've spoken with siblings, friends and collegues who've had RCTs and they have all agreed that the procedure is straightforward and I'm just working myself up into a state for nothing! For the last two days I've kept away from any dental-related websites and I feel so much more calm. I'm just thinking of it as a big-filling now and am looking forward to being over it. I have to go in for two sessions with the endo so the whole treatment will be spread over a week, but I have a trip away planned for three days after the last appointment so I'm just trying to concentrate on that....and internet researching sights, shopping and restaurants is actually proving a lot more fun that researching RTCs!!:D

Thank you so much again for your advice, it's really helped to put me at ease!!:)
