Starting Sparring Tomorrow, CAN'T WAIT

    So i'm starting sparring tomorrow, i started kickboxing and thai boxing in july but now im more focused on kickboxing as it suits better. I actually Can't wait to properly spar. Few my mates have sparred a good bit and from what they say its just making me more eager. bought my head gear today and all. Just wondering any tips on what and what not to do? and When did you guys start sparring and anyone ever receive any bad shots/blows sparring?

    try and spar with the more experienced lads\girls in the gym. They generally have more control and should give you tips and encouragement.

    Enjoy and most important keep the guard up :)

    Sparring is a learning curve , who ever your sparring with shoudl be encouraging you and helping you learn, if they go to hard say it or vice a versa if you feel you need to work a bit harder.

    Dont expect to be the king on your first session!! Be careful not to turn your back when under pressure, for most people this is a natural reaction at first. Always remember to breathe, sometimes a rush of adrenaline can cause beginners to hold their breathe for most of the round.

    Probably the best advice I can give is this: concentrate on getting one technique right each session, whether it be in attack or defence, this way you can build your style over time. Best of luck with it anyway.

    Yes I would agree with boxer.fan, it sounds strange but learning to at times be relaxed and breathe instead of been tensed up all the time with nervousness is something most beginners have to learn. When your seperated after a an excahange remember to relax while keeping your guard and try to breathe as normal as possible. Been tensed up all the time is only going to burn yourself out.

    Sparring is like anything, you just have to do it to learn it. In the beginning you will get caught again and again, it will seem that the other guy can read your mind and seems to know just what punch or kick you are going to throw and be ready to counter you. This is beacuse through experience he has learned to read the suttle changes in your body language, e.g. a slight change of body stance and a slight pulling back of the shoulder before you throw a punch, the minor shift of weight from one leg to the other before a kick is thrown etc and hence can sense what attack you may throw at him. This reading of body langauage only comes from experience, I'm afraid there's no way around it. At times it will be frustrating but their's no way around it, but just sticking to it until you develop the same skills. And also the first punch/kick usually does not score, it's the setup for the 2nd pr 3rd one that might get through.

    Don't go running like a bull into spar after spar with guys who you know are better than you. We only learn in short steps, it will take time rather than getting your nose pummeled all the time before instinctive muscle memory develops along with your reactions. It's about regulair weekly practise of maybe 3 times a week. Best of luck, stick with it and it will come.
