Ipod Touch 3G "location cannot be determined"

Some apps ask if they can use your current location, and my 1G Touch was able to pinpoint my location at home (wifi). However my 3G cannot. I have location services switched on in the main menu. Anyone got any idea what's going on?

    Thanks

True GPS requires you to be able to receive information from the satellites. If the unit can not "see" the satellites then it can not determine its location. There could also be other reasons e.g. radio interference for example.

Try going out on the street or an open space and see if it works there. At least, you can eliminate location has a possible reason.

I didn't think an iPod Touch had a GPS?

This iPod touch doesn't have GPS. The 1st gen model also didnt have it but I was occassionally able to pinpoint my location on Google maps when connected to a wifi network.

The OP says he's Touch can work out where he is through wi-fi but his 3G can't. He or she seems to have both a Touch and a 3G iPhone.

Sorry by 3G I meant 3rd gen. The iPod touch can be told via wifi where you are and your location is pinned in google maps. This is handy for apps like pumps.ie whereby prices in your vicinity are then displayed. I believe the ip address is the key to your location being picked up.

    What software is each running?

Older versions used the Skyhook registry to get the location fix but since 3.2 Apple have been using their own that may not have the necessary data in it.

I'm on software v4.1. Thanks for the explanation, it all makes sense now.
