Hi, I recently bought a peavey classic 30 and have noticed a hiss from the amp even when no instrument is plugged in... is this to be expected or can it be fixed to be more silent? Secondly one of my preamp tubes is glowing alot less than the other two and im wondering is this a sign that it needs to be changed? I'm sorry for my ignorance if these questions seem really basic but this is my first tube amp.

    Thanks :)

It sounds like there's something loose inside the amp. It could be anything tbh. You'll just have to have a look around.

As for the hiss, i'm not too sure, it could be a grounding issue.

I only have the classic a few weeks, havent looked much into all the in's and out's of it. Its defo noisy all the time, hissy, I tend to notice it less as the volume goes up. I found the reverb effected the overall hiss, more reverb = more hiss. I've had a few diff tube amps, they all tend to be some what noisy.

Not 100% sure why you've got two hotter tubes than another, could be a lot do to with pre and post channels, different settings or tubes by their nature being different, is the amp brand new? are the tubes matched? No real way to tell from here.

Best take the classic into a decent shop and let someone who knows amps well take a look at it. If in doubt and all that.

Word of warning, if the tube or tubes happen to be worn out dont take the risk, have them replaced. If you leave it like I did, your amp will go up in a puff of smoke, looks cool but costs a lot to fix.

i'd actually hazard a guess that the two glowing tubes are the faulty ones, working tubes actually don't glow very much, but tubes with cathode stripping will and it's a sign they are on the way out

was it second hand or new?
