One I've been looking at is the Toshiba AC100.

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/06/toshiba-ac100-android-smartbook-hits-the-united-kingdom

It's incredibly thin and the hardware is extremely nice. Only problem is the fact that it has android 2.1 installed on it. Specs are low in terms of RAM and processor speed but for the price and size you have to have some sort of a trade-off

I've been humming and hawing over getting it but if I was the first thing I'd do it to install ubuntu or mint. I'm not sure what people's thoughts are on this??

For the OP, pretty miuch most netbooks on the market will suit!

    Typical specs to aim for:

    Atom 450 1.6Ghz cpu
1gb RAM (with room to expand up to 2-3GB)
    160-250GB HDD
    Bluetooth
    6 cell battery (most important!)

Biggest difference between models is battery life, varying from 4hrs-10hrs..reading reviews will help you here.

There are other deciding factors such as HDMI for HD playback on external moinitors/TV, Ion GPUs for light gaming, USB 3.0/e-sata for file transfer etc but for what you want models such as the following will do:

    Acer Aspire One
Samsung NC10 (actually pretty much the entire samsung range)
    Dell Mini 10
MSI Wind Plus (only €200 in argos)

    Spudmonkey:

Pretty looking thing indeed. Although the specs make me cry!
Surely the hdmi is pointless as the machine would struggle with any HD playback!
Ubuntu would be the best option here, win 7 would just take up too much resources...although im not sure how the touchscreen will work!
Any word on battery life and RAM slot capacity?

From their website, the HDMI is supposed to be capable of 1080p formats but this is most likely static images rather than video. An extra USB or two instead would have been a much better option.

Onboard memory is 512MB and I don't think this is expandable. Battery life is said to be 8 hours but I'd imagine this is with very little processes running. This is also tested with Android which is designed for phones and has to be low on resources anyway. Who knows how this would be affected if using ubuntu. One thing I would have a gripe with is the tiny 8Gb HD.
