    The only ubuntu version I can get working is 9.10
    On booting into this I get

    usplash: Setting mode 1152x864 failed
    usplash: Using mode 1024x768

    On all others it doesn't seem to make this correction, I can't install them, I can't even try them out, after I select install or try without install the screen will go blank due to this resolution error? None of the advanced booting options seem to work which should be booting into lower resolutions, any ideas on one that will work? Driver problem? Why does only 9.10 work? :S

    I have a dell vostro, I know I can boot into other versions( login sound etc), I just can't see them!
    Have tried things like linux vga=771 acpi=off noapic nolapic

    trying to edit xorg config is fairly hard with a blank screen and I can't seem to get into a 'text mode'

    I tried to install 10.04 onto an old (2005ish) laptop with built in Intel graphics...had same problem with screen going blank during install. I found this tutorial and by setting i915.modeset=1 it worked and I was able to complete the installation. Maybe worth a try...(or try one of the other suggestions there)

    <not much help>
    I had this same issue when booting to Linux Mint, on HP laptop with a large resolution. However it ended up booting, and the display worked fine.
    </not much help>

    Assuming its a laptop, have you tried to connect the machine to an external monitor? this would lower the resolution & maybe give you something to look at..

    try downloading the alternate version install CD, the installer uses a term based interface.

    also when booted into 'nix use the shortcut crtl+alt+(F1-F6) to switch to a text based tty terminal session and ctrl+alt+F7 to go back to GUI

    from there wou can change your xorg.conf szettings and use the GDM restart command to restart gnome desktop with new X settings.

    Thanks, guys, I'll have a look. I can't use the crtl+alt+(F1-F6) to switch to a text based tty terminal session and ctrl+alt+F7 to go back to GUI method as I just get a blank screen, however I know it is actually going into it, I just can't see it.

    Not sure if i915.modeset=1 would work as I don't have inbuilt graphics? Will have a look!
