BEST BJJ Instructional DVDs & Books

Any particularly good ones to check out?

While I'm fully aware that the best way to learn via lessons, I'm very unlikely to have the time to roll as much as is usually recommended. So unless I find someone in my gym to roll with during my lunch break, I'm likely to only get 1-2 lessons (most likely 1) per week.

So I'd like to use a DVD to supplement the lessons. I'm not looking to pick up any exotic techniques - just the basics explained really well so I can mentally drill them in between rolling sessions and lessons.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Serious LOLs. The only thing that would be funnier would be if you'd recommended Choson Ninja

Paul, I don't want to sound patronising, but are you sure you haven't got the time to do regular BJJ training? Can you make time? (God, that *does* sound patronising. Sorry, I just think it's a question you need to ask yourself.)

Saulo's book is really good though, especially the first two chapters on survival and escapes.

Robson Moura, his stuff is floating around the net. Very helpful.

I guess theyre doing a good job promoting bjj in some ways, they have a load of youtube hits.

Everyone starting out digs that rubber guard business for a while anyway.

10th Planet BS aside, my main problem is that he glosses through the stuff pretty quickly, leaving out a lot of important details.

He also seems to be the main source of info for those guys who come into class wanting to show you some crazy inverted gogoplata when they still can't do a scarf hold.

tbh I just found the videos handy for watching stuff that I had already done in class. The basics like guard passing, armbars, etc.

theres some legit 10th planet lads rolling around in the US, but pretty much everyone nowadays with the internet and all, thought it was the be all and end all for about 2 months.

i got the twister and rub guard book and all.

I think NG-DUCK posted two vids before, one where some lads show about 12 riduiculous techniques in 5 mins, and saulo shows like half of a pass in 10.

When I said "BS" I wasn't so much knocking 10th Planet, as I was thinking more about how people get all worked up about Ari Bolden's rank.

The Saulo video is a good example. Ari makes nice entertaining, but shallow, videos with cool moves. Saulo drones on and on about where your elbow needs to be when doing some pass that doesn't even end in a sub. Saulo's a BJJ world champion who's coached plenty of other champions. Ari's been in - as far as I know - one BJJ tournament where he performed fairly mediocre.

I remember reading on either the UG or sherdog that some sport expo (maybe the arnold??) had booked him to do an open seminar or demo or something on the foot of his youtube success, and there was this online petition to get him off of it.

Apparently he doesnt roll with people from outside his school and all.

Anyway, for sure he is getting hits and stuff but its like watching accrington stanley to learn how to play football when you could be watching chelsea.

+1 for the Saulo books or DVDs. The difference with Saulo's stuff is the detail he goes into. You could literally watch a technique 10 times and find stuff you missed before and it's ALL important.

I always found the SBG ones very good too for simple things like posture. Can't remember what they were called though :(

One of the boys was saying that Draculihno's ones are very good for simple techniques but I've never seen them myself.

My 'problem' with books, is that i usually have forgotten the technique by the time im in the gym.

how do you lads use them?

Usually, and this is going to make me sound like a weirdo, I "bring" the book with me.

It's mental I know and some of the looks I get... phew.

Usually I only find them good for stuff I've already been taught, but have forgotten some of the details of, or for seeing variations of stuff I can already do fairly well.

Saulo Ribeiro - Jiu Jitsu Revolution 1 and 2

    and

    www.mginaction.com

    all you'll ever need

matt thornton has a new set of dvds out now/soon, i think john kavanagh has a whole one to himself on it, it would be worth getting a look at, especially if you're starting out (or starting again) in bjj/mma

    Saulo Ribierio - Jiu Jitsu Revolution 1 & 2
    Braulio Estima - The Guard

I also get quite a lot from Cane Prevosts blog: http://caneprevost.wordpress.com/

I work in the IFSC and would be free to roll most weekdays. I'm sure there are other BJJ guys around the IFSC too

I have a stack of books in my toilet, I spend enough time there so thats when I do most of the reading.

Usually theres something I need to work on in training eg, side mount escapes so Ill scroll through the books for that and try it in training.

I like to read books as I find it easier to pick up the techniques instead of watching complete dvd's. The best book by far or as I like to call it the Jiu Jitsu bible :) is:

Saulo Ribierio - Jiu Jitsu University

    Websites would be:

    www.ILoveBJJ.com

    and various subscriptions on youtube:

Jiu Jitsu Matrix, sambosteve, stephankesting, anything by Erik Paulson and SBG etc..

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm working on getting BJJ classes at SanoVitae, starting in the New Year. I'll keep you posted when everything is confirmed.

He's an Aikido black belt, a JJJ black belt, a BJJ blue belt and a 10thPlanetJJ purple belt, he's generally teaching 10th Planet moves so I don't get what the hate is for? He's qualified to do it tbh.

And they have Keith Owens videos on there too, he's a legit black belt..

I get why he gets the hate from coaches and all because of people coming in and thinking they know it all after watching a few of their videos, but in all fairness, it's a decent enough website... For learning 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu moves..

He is the reason that new lads are working on their clockwork orange rubberpencil defence after class instead of guard passes.

Don't get me wrong it looks cool and I'm sure it's fun, but It is a system that favours body types rather than skill and you dint see marcello Garcia locking up any mission control.

    Agreed with the first part...

Anyways, on a side note I found his Mastering The Spiderweb DvD pretty helpful, compared to the other two..

Saulo's book and DvDs are amazing too.. Demian Maia's are pretty good too.
