02 (newly bought then by aunt) not driven for years. Is it saveable now?

    Hi all,

My aunt bought a new (then) Hyundai in 02. Unfortunately she got ill and couldn't drive it a year later. She had all her marbles though, and would not get rid of it, for love nor money.

She has gone to a nursing home now sadly, and we were wondering what to do with the car, which has sat outside her house since 2003. I doubt it was even turned over in that time. She has said that we can have it if we want it now.

    Any advice?

I suppose a mobile mechanic could have a look etc. Just wondered if it is a write off now.

I got a Opel Calibra up and running a few weeks ago which hadn't budged in years. It didn't need a whole lot, but here's what I had to do :

New battery (I actually managed to condition the old one afterwards)
New fuel line as the old one had perished
New brake fluid, and replaced the rubber brake hoses to be safe

It got a service and a good look over by a garage after the owner was able to move it, but those were the bare minimum needed to make it go vroom.

I'd doubt its a write off, a good service and maybe drain the tank and refill it would probably get it moving. Have you tried starting it off another battery? Might just turn over and drive away, never know

I'd replace all the fluids if I was keeping it to drive.

The tyres will need to be checked/replaced as they have probbly gone flat and perished where they were folded.
I would change the oil and filter before even starting it.
    Charge the battery.
Petrol is probably gone off so that may need to be drained.
New brake fluid like has been said.
The brakes are probably rusted solid, especially if it has drum brakes on the rears. If disks then they'll probably be fine but they won't work for the first while.

We'd a Sierra laid up for years. Just stuck a battery into it and it started 2nd go, we forgot about the kill switch 1st time. Just make sure it gets a full service and tires are checked/replaced as others have posted
