NBS Satellite Broadband: Problems configuring connection on 2nd Laptop

    Hi,

we got NBS Satellite Broadband a couple of weeks ago. The technician of three.ie did the configuration on my home laptop. Now I want to have broadband on my other laptop. The support desk of three said, I only have to plugin the LAN-cable and it would work - well, it doesn't :-(
I tried several things, eg restarting without any programms to outrule any conflicts (msconfig/systemstart), I tried without firewall - nothing.

If I plugin the cable, I see some connectivity, but the message I get it, that there is no connectivity because the system could not get a network adress for the computer.

Who can help me? Thanks in advance!!!

    Bridgette

Power reset probably clears the ARP cache and therefore it reassigns having 'forgotten' the original computer.

I suspect you need a second network card in the primary computer and to implement network sharing on it just like in the old dialup days. Then cable the second computer to that with a network cable or crossover network cable

Your solution is perfect for using one or the other but not both at the same time.

A second network card in a laptop ( house has two laptops) can be done using AD HOC wireless ( ...ie not using a wireless switch with network sharing implemented on the primary laptop. In extremis both may have firewire installed and you can connect them with a firewire ( IE1394 it is called) cable. But Network sharing must be enabled on that adapter on the primary.

The primary must also be plugged into the sat box with a network cable of course.

I thought the NBS spec was supposed to include a Router.

Anyway a €50 ethenet Router (often called cable Router) adds Firewall & WiFi too. 4 ports for stuff and 5th ethernet port goes to Modem (Cable, Fixed Wireless, Bridged DSL or Satellite, ANY modem with ethernet).

In this case then a standard WAN router should do the trick, it will take the single IP address and use NAT to share it to as many machines as you like. They range in price from about €50/60 upwards.

What equipment 3, or SBI supplies, or what the retail packages are is irrelevent. The only thing that counts is the NBS contract. I could be wrong about the Router requirement, but even Tesco, Argos and Maplin sell suitable ones (Any with no telephone jack/ADSL port and 1 "WAN" ethernet port instead, with WiFi and 4 regular ethernet ports).

I'd avoid the cheaper Tesco and Argos ones and definitely avoid Belkin, aka the usual ones PcWorld/Currys/Harvey Normans people recommend

I can highly recommend this Linksys, good quality router that won't give any trouble and will give good coverage (may not look as flashy as a shiny Belkin):

Elara are an Irish outlet, they take Laser which is a bonus

    Hi Condi, hi everyone,

thank you so much - it's so simple to change the wires with your guidance now!!!
I also got a router today, so now I even managed to get every Laptop wireless as well. Now I'm only struggling with some settings, but I guess I manage that.

    THANK YOU!!!! :-)

I got a Belkin, it works OK, but it isn't shiny unfortunately. What's wrong with them?
