Ye you get paid for them. Nothing massive or anything but keeps you ticking over. You'll probably be on anything between €18,000-€19,500. Thats the yearly rate.

As for whether they're hard to get into. It all depends. Internship places in the Big 4 have been tight the last few years. As a result many of the "places" are just taken by people who have contacts in the firm. But there will be places advertised..usually in audit. They usually advertise on their websites around February time. If you have a high enough GPA and maybe some good previous work experience then you should be ok to beat off competition. But in my experience it comes down to academic performance and good personality.

If you want to get a foot in the door and grab some good experience to see if this career is for you I would strongly recommend it.

Think you might be getting apprenticeship/articles mixed up with Intern.

Interns normally get paid nothing, and can cover any business area. Interns may get certain costs i.e. job related expenses reimbursed.

The intern set up is that an experienced person will take you on for a certain time period and you will learn from them as you help them out. Some people will benefit and get good experience - others will find out what it was like being an 18th century slave.

    This is just utterly false.

Anybody that has done an accountancy internship with the Big 4 will tell you get paid. It is a decent wage too for a job in which you are there to get some experience. Yes your expenses will get reimbursed too. But you are by no means a slave. As with any job where you start on the bottom of the ladder you will be subjected to the small, "lighter" work but you will also engage in the work what 1st year graduates are doing. You are by no means a slave.

I dont know where you are getting your information from. But from my experience that was the case.

On a separate note..I dont think you should be bashing voluntary non-paid internships either. In the current jobs climate they have a big role to play in getting this country back on its feet. New graduates and experiences professionals alike would gladly take up such a role. Think you need to get your head out of the 18th century mate.

Very glad to hear interns in the big four get paid.

However, I am not your mate, and if you persist in this tone you will find out just how much I am not your mate.

    Thank you.

I am not bashing interns paid or otherwise - I am however pointing out that they need to be careful. Not all interns were as fortunate as yourself.

I know plenty of people who have done internships in both the Big Four firms and in smaller firms, and all of them were paid for it ... it seems to be a pretty similar wage to that paid to first year trainees, which makes sense, seeing as there's no study leave or exam fees to be taken into account. The work given to them is similar to that given to first year trainees as well.

It's a really good way of getting your foot in the door - if you make a good impression then you'll obviously be way ahead of the other candidates if you decide to apply for a trainee position later.

I just finished an internship in the Big 4 the end of August and Yes we got paid!

I didn't have any contacts and it wasnt too hard to get in. Good grades, relevant work experience and really good research of the company you're applying are what were important I my view.

Applications are Jan/Feb and I would strongly advise the work experience if you are thinking about going down that route!

I finished a 3 month internship in august and I got paid and would never have considered myself a slave! Good experience.

Numbernerd, in what department did you do your internship? Audit, Consulting? Would you recommend doing the internship you did?

gottcha_goin, reality check. In the 18th century people would PAY for an internship. Nowadays, people will get between €0 and €11.5k per year. The big 4 may pay a bit but for most people this will not apply.

Tenchi Fan you're the one who needs the reality check. Internships with the large accounting practices are all paid. You have yet to provide any information in relation to these so called unpaid internships. Nearly every poster on this thread have confirmed that internships with the big accounting firms are all paid. This is what the OP was asking about. I think you should try not to discourage the OP in relation to internships with the big accountancy firms, a subject you seem to know little about.

    Basically stop Trolling.

    Here's your reality check

    http://images.businessweek.com/ss/09/12/1210_best_internship_companies/2.htm

I realise this is america but theres nothing stopping Irish students applying for these and it shows that many internships theses days are far from unpaid.

Really? I think you'll find the OP's post was vague - I didn't even realise until later that s/he probably meant accountancy internships. :o

Asking about accountancy internships on the accountancy forum, that is a strange one isn't it :pac:

Saw the thread from the main page and didn't realise it was in the accounting forum - don't just hang out here - I have a life goddamit! :D

And to be fair - he didn't mention accountancy in his actual post. So, it could still be any internship he's interested in as people do come here for general business advice. Good to see s/he's come back since though :)

Pwc are offering an internship at the moment. I'm not sure if its only for students though. It starts in January, and you get the summer off and then start again from September to December.

    It's also paid.

How does that work? Is it at weekends or something?

No it's full time, you defer your college year. KPMG ran one starting in september too

Do you have an internet link to the PWC one?

    Thanks

Big four internships that run 6+mths appear to usually involve penultimate year business/accountancy grads and the pay is equiv to first year trainees or slightly below 18-20k (it used to actually be higher leading to many p**sed off trainees!). Most ppl get some first year work but expectations and pressure are lower and if you do well in an internship/co-operative placement $as it comes near time for milkround applications you may be offered and interview/contract for start the following year before you finish up.

I'm pretty sure that all internships with medium/large Irish companies are paid. You'd have be in America (or at least watch a lot of TV) to think otherwise. I did banking, governmental and marketing summer internships in college and they were all paid. Granted, things might have changed in the last year or two.........
