    Evening,

I am researching buying a new car....budget would be about 24 - 27K give or take...

I would like peoples opinions on the following or indeed any alternatives

    * Kia Sportage (new model) - I know its only out but any thoughts
    * Mitsubishi ASX - again only out but any thoughts
    * Nissan Qashqai
    * Kia Soul

What is important to me is a car with a good bit of power on the likes of motorways and other country roads combined with good fuel efficiency - can you get these things together??

    Thanks in advance guys...

Subaru outback diesel has a six speed box AFAIK. Dunno about price.

MINI Countryman Cooper D? You'd get the late 60's in terms of mpg, tax is 104 Euro. Has 260nm of torque too, which is about the same torque as a 3 litre Z4. The SD is due too, but that'll be a 2 litre and won't be on the market for the immediate future.

Sorry should have added a requirement for a diesel engine in around the 1.5 to 1.8 litre engine....above 1.8l is too high for me....;)

The Countryman's a 1.6. Why are you limiting yourself to engine size?

    Insurance I'd say.

Can the Mitsi ASX be gotten with a diesel engine smaller than a 2.0? Didnt think they had such a thing.

The Qashqai 1.5DCi only has 106bhp, so that couldn't be classed as powerful. You should get an SVE for your budget though.

I'd be amazed if you'll be able to get a new Sportage in the near future. They brought out the Sorento, everyone wanted it and now you cant get one within 20 weeks of ordering it. I'd say the Sportage will be the same.

I'd discount the Soul, its not in the same boat as the others you listed.

The Kia soul is indeed a smaller car and in a different league.....BUT I am a small person and was thinking about parking a bigger car in some car parks might be difficult???

It seems to have more power etc though than my current other options....

On the thought of the Mini - not really liking the Mini option to be honest..., thanks though...:)

I had to repair a soul early this year. Had desperate trouble getting the paint to stick to the bodywork, and phoned a bodyshop I knew had worked on one before. Turns out in their cost saving's, Kia decided plastic would be too good to make the bumpers from, so it's some recycled crap made from plastic, and other odds and ends. Those cars are built down to a price.

i dont understand these crossover cars.....whats the point?
if you need a off road vehicle get a 4x4, otherwhise get a salon or estate.
If i had to choose a crossover it would be the Skoda yeti.

You're not buying the car, the OP is. It's their money to spend how they want. OP, there's also the option of the Peugeot 3008, which won a few awards when it came out.

If you're driving on motorways they're a terrible choice. Counter in ever-deteriorating Irish country roads though and they would make some sense...

    And I speak as a Subaru owner (low-profiled road-hugging rather than Outback-type)...

Still find it hard to stomach any of the above mind...

Thats why i said ''i dont understand these cars''
Mostly they are as ugly as Susan Boyle.
An Outback or V50 is far classier lookling than a Quasquai sack of b0110x.

Mitsubishi have a new 1.8 litre DiD that they are launching in the ASX, produces around 150bhp and Band C for motor tax.

OP don't forget the Hyundai iX35, it's the sister car of the Kia Sportage.

In your opinion. Why are you posting in the thread if you have no interest in the type of car the OP wants to buy? Is it just to make the OP feel bad?

An Outback is a crossover, no? Or do you mean cars that look like they can do off-road but can't?

Easy now, let's not get personal.:)

Would have to second the recommendation for the Pug 3008. The Kia looks expensive for what it is though it does look nice. The 3008 is well priced. Reasonable power and economy from the 1.6D. Nice interior and loads of space. Though you'd have to get the spec above the base model for bluetooth and alloys. The Kia isn't really in the same class in that its not really a crossover.

More money than sense comes to mind ;)
Wait till early 2011 and buy a decent car 2nd hand for €15K or so and keep the rest for the next few years tax and maintenance.

Is there a reason why you want to go smaller? The Qashqai fits your budget, and sounds like what you are looking for. There is a price increase due very shortly as its being revised for Euro5 emissions. Its getting a DPF and something else, so I think it's going up by 400 quid.

Its quite a bit bigger than I am currently driving (Mitsubishi Colt) - I am a small person (less than 5ft 2!) and for my job I end up in various car parks.....I am concerned if I get what might be termed a big car I will have trouble in some of the car parks in and around Dublin....??

    Anyway.....

    Mazda 3

    Suzuki SX4

    Any thoughts or opinions..???

    Thanks :D:D

Edited to add, Toyota Urban Cruiser????

+1 on the Juke. Same engine as the Qashqai. Nice to drive too!

a crossover is a 2wd car that looks like a jeep , the sportage is actually 4wd afaik , making it a small jeep , if however it is 2wd it is a crossover

edit : the sportage comes in 2 and 4wd , but the 4wd is 2 litre which is too big for you apparantly so youd be opting for the 2wd version with the smaller engine , id say go for that

Me neither, but if the OP wants something sort-of Jeepy looking but not too big, the Skoda Yeti gets very good reviews.
