Working in the UK - PPS number will suffice?

I've recently got a new job in Manchester for which I am required to present (along with passport) my national insurance number OR P45 / P60. I'm rather ignorant when it comes to these things - I've only recently graduated, and haven't had all that many jobs in my time. I'm wondering - if I am unable to find / produce a p45 / p60 will my PPS number be acceptable, seeing as I'm Irish - without a NTL insurance number. They want the physical card, which I won't be able to get as it is in Ireland. Do you think they'll accept a photocopy / faxed image (trusting that I can use my PPS in the first place)

What you need to do ASAP is contact your local job centre, call them and they'll set up an interview for you to get a National Insurance Number, Its the UK version of our PPS number.

    Read this

Its a simple interview, you bring along your passport, they take a few details and you'll get sent your NIN in the post. Your physical card will follow about 2-3 months later (well, that's how long it took to get mine and they still spelt my name wrong!)

If you mention you have a job lined up, they'll usually give you an interview ASAP.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for that, If I can just confirm - I take it that a PPS number wouldn't be accepted?

    No it won't.

Go into a job centre. Even if you can't get an interview straightaway you can get a temporary national insurance number.

Your PPS number means nothing outside of Ireland - it's your National Insurance number they're looking for. The interview is quick and painless and you should have the number in a couple of weeks.

Your P45s etc. from Ireland would also be irrelevant so don't worry about not having them.

As the advice above said; ring the job centre (Job Centre Plus) in Manchester and they'll arrange an interview for you. You can give the interview date to your employer in lieu of an NI number. An NI (National Insurance) number is the British equivalent of the PPS number.

It may take a bit of time to get the interview, however, as there's usually a backlog with it, and then getting the actual number will take around 3 months.
