Wii disc error

Ok I know there's already been several threads on similar problems but any way. The family's Wii is giving an error when reading any disc. It's the "Eject disc and restart Wii" error. The usual advice seems to be to send it back to Nintendo but the Wii is well out of warranty and I also have the Hombrew channel installed. Can this be fixed using the lens cleaning kit? I've also heard that replacing the laser module can fix this. I would have no qualms about doing this if it was an actual solution or indeed replacing the entire drive if necessary.

The disc drive in the Wii is known to be of a poor quality. Some of them get noisey, some of them fail like yours. One option some people take, is to use a usb hard drive with their Wii & run software from that. Takes the sting out of a repair bill, & works quite well.

Cheers, can I use any USB drive and without further modification?

You'll have to hack the wii to get it to work and install the homebrew channel. It's a software hack so all you need is an SD card and the usb hard disk. There's plenty of tutorials on line about how to do it.
