updated my locked (to o2), unrooted htc desire to 2.2 the other day, and now there is no sign of the android market on my phone.

downloaded the update officially (from settings > about > system software updates)

i had a shortcut/app on my homepage to get to the market but now when i click it it says "the linked programme is no longer installed on your phone"

    any ideas?

Do a factory reset this will 'bring back' the market. Make sure to back up any info on your phone

Or do the clear cache in the recovery partition first, might save setting everything up again.

    Same problem here.

What does clearing the cache do?

Also if I factory rest the phone, won't it wipe any apps I have on the phone? how does this affect apps I bought on the market previously?

yes, to the latter, hence why I suggested the former to be tried first.

Since you asked about the cache, I won't make a joke, but It's basically where the OS puts or allows apps to put some of their working data.
Obviously, clearing corrupted data refreshes the app rather than completely installing anew.
