I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what this means or how to tell if a shaft is hard stepped?

Was trying to look it up online but someone here might be able to explain it to me in simple terms

Hard stepping is when you move the stafts down from the club above. So a 9 iron has the shaft of a pitching wedge and a 5 iron the shaft of a 6 iron.

Soft stepping would be the other way so a wedge would have the shaft of a 9 iron.

I am not sure how you can tell. I checked my clubs and the four and five iron shafts have the same numbers on them. Perhaps there's markers under the grips?

I managed to find an explanation as to the hows and whys...

i did google it,thats what i said in the opening post. i looked it up online but only found very technical explanations and nothing as simple and straight forward as Couerdelion was kind enough to post. So thats why i asked, thought that was the whole point of a forum like this, to ask questions and gather info.

I'll ask your permission next time and see am i allowed ask a question thats ok by your standards, thanks

f you want to check the stiffness of your shafts find a clubmaker in your area that has a CPM frequency analyzer and he can tell you what the differance is between each club?
