Boards.ie National Zombie Survival Plan

Not sure if this has been done yet, but thought it would be a good idea for us to come up with a national zombie survival plan, for us to survive in the long run.

There are many factors that Ireland has to its advantage - that we are an island and that our terrain is mostly mountainous. The fact that we are surrounded by water on all sides means that we would have time between the original outbreak and when it reaches our land.

This is when we would need to put the plans into action. Everybody should post their suggestions.

    Here are mine:
    • Teach every family to be self sufficient
Specialists in agriculture and farming should be sent to every town, village and city to hold classes/seminars on how to grow their own crops. With this, people have the chance to become self sufficient if barricading themselves in the home is the only option for survival.
    • Arm and train civilians
The army will be pushed to the brim so civilians need to be armed and trained.
    • Divide cities into sections
It would be near impossible to secure whole cities by themselves, so the best action would be to divide cities into section, whether it's by estate, or geographical factors (rivers, hills etc etc). This way the sections could defend themselves, giving cities/large towns a better chance for survival.
    • Set up armed neighbourhood watches
Neighbourhood watches should be set up in all of these sections, patrolling 24/7 to look out for any signs of outbreak. It would be easier to quell any small outbreaks.

What other suggestions do people have?

Heh, fun mental exercise. So lets see:
    • Mandate each household stores at least a year's supply of food and water filters like the Mormons do.
    • Have multiple redundant backup shortwave radio networks.
    • Set up secure points around every populated area for people to get to, containing basic survival equipment like tents and fuel dumps for vehicles and generators as well as helipads and medical triage and quarantine facilities.
    • Prepare a national fallback plan whereby roadblocks and roving dog patrols are set up in phased stages to contain the spread of contagion, backed up by aerial support groups to provide a defence in depth.
    • Basic martial arts, survival, shortwave radio and tactics lessons offered for free, in particular focusing on the use of short bladed weapons, along with basic first aid lessons.
    • National stockpiles of medical supplies and food reserves, and multiple redundant command and coordination points.
    • A concentration on renewable energy so that when the gas stops flowing from Europe and the UK, the lights don't go out entirely.
    • Sealed tunnel evacuation routes from major metropolitan areas.
    • Build up the navy to sequester random boats that might approach the shores, with 24 hour pervasive drone surveillance.
    • Supply each town and urban centre with enough temporary fencing to create reasonably secure zones within them, and provide deeply discounted rolling grilles for normal houses everywhere, covering doors and windows.
That would make every household in the country a secure fortress with enough supplies to last several months at minimum, reasonably regular power supplies, a place to go to when it all goes wrong, and communication lines still intact.

I think it may be a bit to late after the fact, the resources and will to do it may not be there. I don't think it'll be possible to prepare the individuals of Ireland it would be a mammoth task, I'm not saying it would be impossible and a crisis would be the one time the people may take heed but I don't think you could depend on it.

The best they could do is develop a tactical plan that would be up to communities around the country to put into action. They could spread limited resources out to communities but I'd guess they (the government) would do it wrong in that they'd use most resources trying to secure Dublin when they should be spent on more isolated communities as they'd have more time to prepare and would be able to engage any Zombies in smaller groups while they're further away from the town.

But supplying the population with obscure weapons that the population don't know how to use properly won't happen.

What I'd tell towns to do is block main roads into the town and guard smaller roads to stop the free movement of traffic through the smaller populated areas. Even if the government use the army to do aid deliveries the deliveries should be dropped outside the blockade and brought in to prevent cross contamination as the army being front line are very likely to spread the virus.

If society doesn't break down arming the public will cause big problems once supplies run low as people might decide to use they're defensive weapons to raid other towns for supplies.

Kill the 70% of the inhabitants which is weakest.
