Hi today we were playing a round and a friend played the wrong ball for his third shot into a par 5. After he had played the ball he called it and went back to see if he could find his own. He found his own ball and played it as normal. I pulled him that it was a one stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball.

Is this the correct ruling ??

    Definately a penalty, but i think it's a 2 shot penalty.

If you play the wrong ball, in match play you lose the hole; in stroke play you must incur a two-stroke penalty and you must correct the mistake by playing the correct ball (Rule 15-3).

Did he try and argue the toss??

No argument he is honest and called the wrong ball we weren't 100% I thought it was a penalty he wasn't sure so he just scratched the hole.

Can anyone answer for me .
was playing in a society outing the other day and played with someone who hadnt played with b 4 .A 14 handicapper, when he came to putt he grounded the putter but took a few practice swings like a snooker player .Is this legal as in when he grounds the putter he must hit the ball on the next stroke or is it ok to do this ?

It's only "a stroke" when you have intent to hit the ball. It sounds like he just has a lively pre-shot routine.
However, if he grounds the putter behind the ball and the ball then moves before he takes his stroke he would be penailsed as having caused the ball to move (replace the ball where it was and add a penalty stroke). He is maybe leaving himself more susceptible to this penalty but from my reading of your post I don't see anything wrong necessarily.
