If zombies are brain eaters... how do they populate?

This has always been a question on my mind, about the idea that zombies eat brains. If a zombie ate your brain, you would not become a zombie... the brain would have been punctured and thus the zombie could not form. Where does the idea of zombies being only "brain eaters' come from and how did they explain how new zombies were formed?

My guess is just the movies, but still when something needs to be shot in the brain to be killed, and a bite infects and creates more... in no way should it eat the brains of its victims.

I always think of this too. I reckon the zombies population only increases because of the people who escape after being only slightly nibbled on

It depends on what type of Zombies you are talking about. Assuming it's the classic Zombies, Return of the Living Dead is where the 'braiiins' came from, and it was more of a comedy approach to the original flesh eating Zombies. Originally, they hungered for flesh, and it was only after a person died that they would rise from the grave as a Zombie.

If "zombies" do exist, then it will be likely due to the spread of an infection akin to 28 Days Later, so they will populate with the outbreak.

bites.. not every zombie attack would involve brains being eaten, if the skin is pierced the infection spreads, new zombie. If the brain is eaten or otherwise destroyed, the infection cannot spread enough to animate the brainless host. Although the flesh may be infected locally it would not animate.

get yerself a copy of 'world war z' by max brooks, its around 7 euro in easons well worth it for tidbits like that :)

Well, in the classic night of the living dead, you didnt have to be bitten to become a zombie. I believe it was because of the radiation from the satellite that you would become a zombie after your death (no matter what cause). It is somewhere further down the line that the idea of the infection comes from...

the brain eating zombies didnt populate. these are the zombies that were dead people who came back to life. ya know the hand emerges from the grave and all that. they wanted brains. the new zombies just want to feed, so flesh and whatnot.
