Fair play for noticing that maybe the course isn't for you and doing something about it. Last year in JF I was in the same dilemma, although I only changed in early november. The earlier you change, the more advantageous the transfer will go. Another benefit is if your current course overlaps with your current course slightly. For example my original course had language components, which made it easier to transfer. Maybe follw up your transfer with the necessary Departments. Get in contact and maybe ask to speak to someone, about what you'd need to cover in the meantime. I did that, and found it very reassuring. I absoultely love my course now, and have no real regrets about my original course. You're not the first who changes, and won't certainly be the last.
As for time period it depends, it should be within next week, you'll receive an e-mail. Best of luck!

I was in the same position as you last year. The deadline to hand in a transfer application is Friday of this week but you probably won't hear back about whether you got the course or not for another week or two.

As to your chances of getting the transfer it'll come down to your leaving cert points and the number of other people also looking to transfer to the course you're looking at.
