    Hey all!

Ehm...I dont really know how to go about getting to the point here so I'll just give ye a quick history!

I started playing the guitar over 5 years ago...I took lessons for around 18 months but they got too costly and I felt they were just going round in cirlce's!
So I decided I'd give it a go on my own, but with exams in school and finding myself a job the guitar took a break!:( Now that I've some free time I decided to take it up again, but the love I first had for it is gone, I mean I still love acoustic music and constantly listen to covers on youtube!
I just feel that anything I try is crap(for the want of a better word:D),
    What would ye advise?
Back to lessons, or just keep hacking away myself?
I think my main problem is, that I know bits of a lot of songs but I know very few full songs!

    Any help??

Do you know anyone else that plays? There is nothing in the world that will get the love of playing and learning back quicker than jamming with others. If you do, don't think about it as "I can get better by doing this" think of it more along the lines of "OH fukk yes, I'm off to play guitar with someone for an hour!!!! :pac::pac::pac:"

I'll post a more detailed and congruent answer later with other suggestions man, was in the same situation as you not too long ago, but gotta crash now, work in 4 hours.

    *DISCLAIMER: I'm a guitar teacher!*

    Now that's clear...!

If you go back to lessons (which you should really think about) you probably need the right lessons.

90% of my students have come from classes where instruction is a simple - here is a song go play song type of format. This is not enough. Music learning is language learning. If you learn a language by learning off phrases you can only ever repeat the phrases, you could never write a book in that language.

A good teacher will equip you with the tools to do things yourself rather than just the songs as well as keeping on your toes.

If you don't go for teaching you should probably start out self study by asking yourself what it is you want to be able to do.

    List the objectives:

    What techniques?
    What styles?
Do you want to write music?

Then ask on forums here for advice on what to do to get to those golas and make up a little study plan to follow through. If you do this and stick to it you're guaranteed to get where you need.

T N L I started playing the guitar 40 years ago and after looking at some of the young'ns I thought I would love to be able to play the guitar, you might ask after 40 blianns what the hell was the boy doing.I was a chord fella for I learned a few chords and when I knew how to play a few Buddy Holly songs I joined any group that would have me and mainly stayed with Major,Minor, and sevenths and after all the time it came as a shock to me that I could not actually play the guitar,I had never heard of Pentatonic scales or the whole half system that any idiot playing the guitar should know, when I retired from Bus Eireann earlier this year I decided I would learn to play before I die and started with lessons from U Tube and anywhere on the Internet that would show me how,I can now say while my fingers don't dance across the fret board I can now do little blues riffs, understand the advantage of playing over Minor and Major chords does and while I have a long way to go I am now better than I was six months ago and there are times when I loose interest but it always comes back and if you have lessons for 18 months you are far ahead of the posse dont give up,try justinguitarlessons.com it's a top of the class site and free for a donation if you wish,God bless,Jim
