Windows 7; Server Service Won't Start (Error 1068)

Myself and my housemate are on a network and regularly share media files from one computer to the one with the sound/projector attached.

After a Windows update last night, my housemate can't get into his own shared folder, and neither can I. He cannot start the services manually, either-- nothing's happening.

After a lot of googling no answers have been turned up and have really just left us more confused than anything else.

It was working fine at least 3 days ago (if not more, we hadn't shared for a few days). Nothing has been changed or altered on the computer except for the windows update.

    Any ideas?

Confirm that the Windows update is the root cause by rolling back the update via System Restore. If it definitely is the update, check what the update is doing by looking it up on the Microsoft Knowledgebase.
